Mineral prospectivity mapping: a potential technique for sustainable mineral exploration and mining activities - a case study using the copper deposits of the Tagmout basin, Morocco

Fatima Zahra Echogdali et al.

Summary: Mineral prospectivity mapping (MPM) was used in this study to optimize copper exploration in the Tagmout basin, Morocco, with the application of a fuzzy operator and parameter weighting to determine the most favorable zones of copper mineralization. The accuracy of the model was confirmed using a normalized density index, showing the reliability of the method. The results suggest that MPM is a powerful technique for planning exploration programs aimed at sustainable mining activities.

A Multidisciplinary Approach for Groundwater Potential Mapping in a Fractured Semi-Arid Terrain (Kerdous Inlier, Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco)

Khalid Benjmel et al.

Summary: This study developed an approach for spatial mapping of groundwater by considering different factors and statistical models, and applied it to a fractured aquifer basin in Morocco to map the spatial variation of groundwater potential. The study analyzed 15 factors influencing groundwater and evaluated the predictive capacity of the models through flow data from boreholes and apparent resistivity data. The results showed that the models were efficient for hydrogeological mapping in the area, with the FR model being more accurate than the SE model in predicting potential groundwater areas.

Assessment of soil erosion risk in a semi-arid climate watershed using SWAT model: case of Tata basin, South-East of Morocco

F. Z. Echogdali et al.

Summary: Increased sedimentation reduces dam efficiency by decreasing storage capacity. This study used the SWAT model to estimate sediment production and identify critical sediment source areas in the Tata basin. The model was calibrated and validated, showing good agreement with measured flow data. The annual sediment yield ranged from 0 to 11 t/ha/y, with downstream areas generating more sediment due to increased surface runoff and other basin characteristics.

Summary: Ensuring water availability in semi-arid mountainous regions requires controlling factors influencing groundwater availability. The use of GIS, remote sensing, and decision-making methods can help understand and assess water availability. In the Tata basin in Southeast Morocco, ten factors were used to explain the groundwater potentiality map, identifying different levels of potential zones.

Summary: This study extends the urban soil geochemical mapping program to Lemesos, Cyprus, and finds that parent lithology is the dominant control on the distribution of most elements, while anthropogenic contamination is best indicated by the Pb-Sn-Ag-Bi suite. Children's playgrounds and school grounds in Lemesos show higher concentrations of elements such as As, Cu, Fe, Ti, Al, S, and Mn due to the use of natural secondary carbonate and basaltic soils.

Summary: This study aims to detect the distribution of gold and copper mineralization stages in the Gouzal-Bolagh deposit in northwestern Iran using zonality index and S-A multifractal modeling based on geological and surface lithogeochemical data. The results indicate the presence of three mineralization stages (Pre-, main, and post-mineralization) with two sub-stages in the main stage (A: Quartz vein and veinlet sulfidation, B: Quartz sulfide brecciation). The study shows major occurrences of gold and copper mineralization in the sulfidation and brecciation sub-stages.
