Assessment of the physicochemical water quality of the Moulouya River, Morocco, using the SEQ-Eau index

Abdellah El Hmaidi et al.

Summary: Surface water is under strong anthropogenic pressures, and rational and sustainable management is necessary. This study uses GIS and the SEQ-Eau system to assess the physicochemical quality of surface waters in the Moulouya River. The results show excellent water quality in the upstream and average to poor quality in the middle and downstream. Water quality is mainly affected by mineralization, phosphorus nutrients, organic and oxidizable matter, and is influenced by urban wastewater, agricultural discharges, and the geological substrate.

Assessment of Groundwater Contamination Risk in Oilfield Drilling Sites Based on Groundwater Vulnerability, Pollution Source Hazard, and Groundwater Value Function in Yitong County

Zhang Fang et al.

Summary: This study developed a comprehensive groundwater pollution risk assessment method for oilfield drilling sites, combining groundwater vulnerability, pollution source hazard, and groundwater value function to assess contamination risk in a more comprehensive way. Using a case study of an oilfield drilling area in Jilin Province, China, thematic maps were generated to assess contamination risk in the quaternary pore unconfined aquifer. The results showed 9.92% of the area at high risk, 21.04% at moderate risk, and 69.04% at none or mild risk.

A Multidisciplinary Approach for Groundwater Potential Mapping in a Fractured Semi-Arid Terrain (Kerdous Inlier, Western Anti-Atlas, Morocco)

Khalid Benjmel et al.

Summary: This study developed an approach for spatial mapping of groundwater by considering different factors and statistical models, and applied it to a fractured aquifer basin in Morocco to map the spatial variation of groundwater potential. The study analyzed 15 factors influencing groundwater and evaluated the predictive capacity of the models through flow data from boreholes and apparent resistivity data. The results showed that the models were efficient for hydrogeological mapping in the area, with the FR model being more accurate than the SE model in predicting potential groundwater areas.

DRASTIC Index GIS-Based Vulnerability Map for the Entre-os-Rios Thermal Aquifer

Vanessa Goncalves et al.

Summary: The sulphurous mineral waters of 'Entre-os-Rios', known for their long history and unique water composition, are one of the most important sulphurous waters in NW Portugal. However, potentially harmful installations within the protection buffer zone pose a threat to the designated purpose. A vulnerability map created using GIS tools can help evaluate the contamination risk in the area and facilitate resource planning and management.

Kaleab Adhena Abera et al.

Summary: The article presents a mapping of water resources vulnerability in the Mekelle area using the DRASTIC method. It produces a modified vulnerability map and validates the models using nitrates. The results highlight areas with high vulnerability as significant sources of pollution and suggest the use of these findings for groundwater resource protection and monitoring.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination of the Environment in the Mining Site of Ouixane (North East Morocco)

Azzeddine Khafouri et al.

Summary: The study assessed metallic contamination in the Ouixane mining area in North East Morocco using ICP-AES and ICP-MS to analyze six metallic elements. The results showed high enrichment of Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils, with extreme contamination by Cd, Cu, and Zn demonstrated by various contamination assessment methods. Water samples also revealed significant pollution by heavy metals, with surface water being more contaminated than well water according to the contamination degree index.

Estimating Soil Water Susceptibility to Salinization in the Mekong River Delta Using a Modified DRASTIC Model

Thanh N. Le et al.

Summary: Saltwater intrusion risk assessment is crucial in preventing salinization in coastal regions. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta, the modified DRASTIC model, incorporating hydrological and anthropogenic factors, outperformed the generic DRASTIC model in evaluating seawater intrusion vulnerability in the soil-water-bearing layer. The study's results provide valuable insights for decision-makers in river catchment and land-use management practices.
