Coupling of satellite-derived precipitation products with Bartlett-Lewis model to estimate intensity-frequency-duration curves for remote areas

Bofu Yu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel framework, SIFD, to estimate sub-hourly IFD curves by combining satellite-derived precipitation products and daily gauge data. The framework was tested using data from seven Australian sites and showed good performance, with estimates close to those of the Bureau of Meteorology.

Update of intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves under climate change: a review

Ioannis M. Kourtis et al.

Summary: This study reviews the main challenges in updating IDF curves considering climate change by conducting a comprehensive literature search and reviewing over one hundred articles published between 2001 and 2021. The motivation behind IDF curve renewal is presented, current practices are described, and the main impacts of climate change on short precipitation extremes are discussed. The study also explores the limitations and future research needs in this area.

Changing Pattern of Intensity-Duration-Frequency Relationship of Precipitation due to Climate Change

Subhra Sekhar Maity et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal changes in Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) relationship of hourly precipitation events across India, and finds that almost the entire Indian mainland will experience an increase in hourly precipitation intensity under climate change scenarios. The findings are alarming for water infrastructures and provide important information for revised design criteria.

Intensity-Duration-Frequency Curve for Extreme Rainfall Event Characterization, in the High Tropical Andes

Diego Escobar-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This paper studies extreme precipitation events in high-altitude cities and proposes an approach to construct IDF curves. By using different parametrization methods and distribution functions, appropriate fitting results are obtained. A spatial interpolation-based analysis is introduced to identify extreme rainfall events based on their duration.

Evaluating intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves of satellite-based precipitation datasets in Peninsular Malaysia

Muhammad Noor et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of four remote-sensing-based gridded rainfall data processing algorithms in Peninsular Malaysia to determine their capability to generate reliable IDF curves. Satellite-based precipitation products tended to underestimate the IDF curves, with GSMaP_GC product found to have the least bias compared to TRMM_3B42V7.

Climate Change and Rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency Curves: Overview of Science and Guidelines for Adaptation

Jean-Luc Martel et al.

Summary: The future warmer climate is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events, with different factors influencing the scaling of rainfall extremes. While climate models have provided more reliable projections, there is still uncertainty at finer temporal resolutions. Governing bodies have adopted various measures to adapt to changing climate impacts on rainfall, but challenges remain in accurately predicting extreme rainfall events and their implications on stormwater runoff.

Understanding the relationship between rainfall and flood probabilities through combined intensity-duration-frequency analysis

Korbinian Breinl et al.

Summary: This study focuses on how rainfall mechanisms and catchment characteristics influence the relationship between rainfall and flood probabilities. Regional differences in rainfall and runoff behaviors were observed, with wet catchments showing higher elasticities compared to dry catchments. Overall, catchment characteristics were found to be the dominant control on flood frequency patterns.

Summary: In a warming climate with increased heavy rainfall, the importance of accurate rainfall statistics is growing. This paper proposes a post-processing method to ensure consistency in rainfall data estimates and evaluates it on simulated and actual data, showing consistent and accurate results.

Spatial variability of precipitation extremes over Italy using a fine-resolution gridded product

Benedetta Moccia et al.

Summary: The study found that the GEV predicts an upper rainfall limit in the analyzed samples, which is considered an artifact due to sample variations; it is suggested to use GEV(+) and BrXII distributions to describe precipitation extremes; the BrXII predicted larger rainfall amounts for large return periods compared to GEV, indicating potential underestimation of extreme rainfall risks by GEV estimates.

Development and Assessment of High-Resolution Radar-Based Precipitation Intensity-Duration-Curve (IDF) Curves for the State of Texas

Dawit T. Ghebreyesus et al.

Summary: This study utilized 19-year NEXRAD Stage-IV radar data to develop IDF curves for the entire state of Texas, with Gumble distribution identified as the best model. Validation shows a +/- 27% difference in over 95% of the state, with median difference ranging between -10% and +10%. Results indicate an overestimation in the western and northern regions, and an underestimation in the southern and southcentral regions.

Flexible and consistent quantile estimation for intensity-duration-frequency curves

Summary: Assessing the relationship between intensity, duration, and frequency of extreme precipitation is crucial for water management system design. By using a duration-dependent formulation of the GEV distribution, a flexible model is developed to describe IDF relations over a wide range of durations.
