The spatial averaging method for non-homogeneous random fields with application to reliability analysis

Sebastian Geyer et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the discretization method for non-homogeneous random fields and applies it to structural analysis. By representing the random field as random variables of local averages, the method efficiently represents the response variability and probability of failure of structural systems.

Theoretical formulation and computational aspects of a two-scale homogenization scheme combining the TPM and FE2 method for poro-elastic fluid-saturated porous media

Tim Ricken et al.

Summary: The development of a two-scale homogenization scheme for poroelastic fluid-saturated porous media is the main focus of this investigation. By combining the general concepts of TPM with the FE2 method, the weak forms for the macroscopic and microscopic scale are formulated and the averaged macroscopic tangent moduli considering the microscale are derived. Additionally, formulation of lower level boundary conditions, which comply with the Hill-Mandel homogeneity condition, is derived. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the features of the methodology.

Optimization of the Groundwater Remediation Process Using a Coupled Genetic Algorithm-Finite Difference Method

S. M. Seyedpour et al.

Summary: This paper studied the remediation of contaminated groundwater using permanganate as an oxidant through in situ chemical oxidation, and verified the model through numerical simulation, showing good agreement between numerical results, physical sandbox experiment, and analytical solution. By applying a genetic algorithm to optimize the design, the time to reach desired concentration and remediation cost can be reduced compared to arbitrary designs.
