CFD simulations of flow fields during ultrafiltration: Effects of hydrodynamic strain rates with and without a particle cake layer on the permeation of mobile genetic elements

Christoph Schwaller et al.

Summary: Membrane ultrafiltration combined with inline dosing of powdered activated carbon is a popular method for water reclamation. However, larger genetic elements can penetrate through the membrane pores due to hydrodynamic forces. Computational fluid dynamics was used to model the flow fields in the feed channel of a dead-end ultrafiltration membrane module and analyze the effects of activated carbon particles on genetic element retention. The results show that the presence of activated carbon particles has negligible impact on permeation through the membrane pores.

Air-to-Air Heat and Moisture Recovery in a Plate-Frame Exchanger Using Composite and Asymmetric Membranes

Amir Jahed Mogharrab et al.

Summary: This study investigated an air-to-air exchanger that aims to remove moisture and sensible heat from an exhaust air stream by indirect contact with another air stream. The temperature and flow rate of the exhaust air, as well as the fresh air to exhaust air flow ratio, were found to be influential parameters affecting the performance of the exchanger. Different membranes were used as the core for the heat exchange module, and their performances were evaluated under various conditions.

Dissecting the role of membrane defects with low-energy barrier on fouling development through A collision Attachment-Monte Carlo approach

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the influence of membrane defects on fouling through simulations. The results show that membrane defects significantly affect fouling by influencing the interaction between foulants and the membrane. Under certain energy barrier conditions, membrane defects can accelerate foulant deposition and shorten or eliminate the metastable period of the membrane.

Summary: Directional freezing is effective in removing impurities from ice crystals and increasing desalination efficiency. This study experimentally and numerically evaluated the desalination of surrogate seawater using directional freezing in radial and vertical directions. Results indicated that lower salinity brine, top freezing, and stirring flow contributed to improved partition and removal efficiency during the desalination process.

Dissect the role of particle size through collision-attachment simulations for colloidal fouling of RO/NF membranes

Junxia Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the role of colloidal size on fouling using a collision-attachment approach, highlighting the importance of four competing mechanisms in governing the net effect of particle size on fouling. It shows that larger particles can enhance flux stability when strong foulant-membrane repulsion prevails, but this trend may be reversed for weak foulant-membrane interaction.

Effective suppression of concentration polarization by nanofiltration membrane surface pattern manipulation: Numerical modeling based on LIF visualization

Wentao Shang et al.

Summary: This study utilized a validated CFD model to investigate the suppression of concentration polarization (CP) by patterned membranes during nanofiltration. Results showed that microstructured membranes had a significant effect on controlling CP evolution by disturbing the flow field near the microstructures. The concentration accumulation on the patterned surface was reduced by 10-12% compared to the flat membrane, and the cambered membrane performed better than the triangular membrane in terms of CP suppression.

Understanding water and solute transport in thin film nanocomposite membranes by resistance-in-series theory combined with Monte Carlo simulation

Chunyan Xu et al.

Summary: A novel water and solute transport model was developed to study the influence of intrinsic permeabilities and geometric parameters of nanoparticles on the flux enhancement of TFN membranes. Simulation results showed that a small amount of porous or non-porous nanoparticles addition can significantly increase flux. To achieve high permeate flux, an optimized combination of nanoparticles mass loading, nanoparticles size, thicker intermediate layer, and minimized nanoparticles aggregation is preferred.

Modelling the critical roles of zeta potential and contact angle on colloidal fouling with a coupled XDLVO - collision attachment approach
