OC4-SO: A New Chlorophyll-a Algorithm for the Western Antarctic Peninsula Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Data

Afonso Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of global and regional satellite algorithms in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and investigates the factors contributing to Chl-a underestimation. The results show that the global algorithm underestimates in-situ Chl-a by an average of ~59%, with higher underestimation in waters with greater Chl-a concentrations. No clear link was found between Chl-a underestimation and pigment packaging effect, phytoplankton community composition, or sea ice contamination. A new satellite Chl-a algorithm, OC4-SO, is proposed based on multi-sensor satellite data and the most comprehensive in-situ dataset collected from the Western Antarctic Peninsula.

Status, Change, and Futures of Zooplankton in the Southern Ocean

Nadine M. Johnston et al.

Summary: In the Southern Ocean, zooplankton taxa play important roles in maintaining food webs and ecosystem functioning. They influence energy flows, biological production, biogeochemical cycles, and food web interactions. The dynamics of these species are expected to be affected by global and local drivers of change, which can have wide-ranging implications for Southern Ocean ecosystems and the services they provide.

Composition and Distribution of Plankton Communities in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean

Valentina V. Kasyan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the taxonomic composition and distribution of plankton communities in the waters off the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding region. The results showed a slight warming of the Transitional Zonal Water with Weddell Sea influence and an increase in the abundance and distribution area of certain species such as copepods, salpa, and Antarctic krill. The study also revealed significant shifts in phytoplankton communities and suggested that further increases in ocean temperature may lead to changes in the composition and abundance of pelagic fauna.

Summary: An expedition was conducted from January 19th to February 14th, 2022, to study the ecosystems of the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic. The expedition focused on understanding modern processes in the Southern Ocean ecosystem and regions of interest for Russian fisheries. Materials were collected to characterize the environment, pelagic communities, benthic fauna, and the variability of important ecosystem components.

Population demographics and growth rate of Salpa thompsoni on the Kerguelen Plateau

Natasha Henschke et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate S. thompsoni population dynamics and growth rates over the Kerguelen Plateau. Results showed that environmental conditions played a crucial role in determining the density and development of S. thompsoni populations, with growth rates higher than those reported from the Antarctic Peninsula but lower than near the Antarctic Polar Front. Despite warm surface waters, low chlorophyll a concentrations restricted the growth of salp populations in the region.

Catch Pattern for Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) of Different Commercial Trawls in Similar Times and Overlapping Fishing Grounds

Zhongqiu Wang et al.

Summary: By comparing the catch patterns of different commercial krill trawls, significant differences in length and density of krill between trawls were found. These differences are likely related to gear design factors such as mesh sizes used in the trawls.

Peculiarities of Water Circulation in the Central Part of the Bransfield Strait in January 2020

Summary: The study presents the results of thermohaline parameters and currents measurement in the Bransfield Strait in Antarctica during the 2020 expedition by the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences. It identifies the intrusion of deep water from the southern branch of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current into the strait. Estimates of current velocity and water transport were also provided, with a total transport of 5.03 Sverdrup to the northeast.
