Cascading effects of freshwater salinization on plankton communities in the Sierra Nevada

Emma R. Moffett et al.

Summary: Road salt runoff causes salinization of freshwaters, with significant impacts on aquatic species. The experiment revealed that salt addition increased zooplankton biomass and reduced phytoplankton biomass. Zooplankton showed a salt-limited response at low ionic concentrations, and salinity primarily affected phytoplankton biomass through top-down regulation by grazers.

The effects of salinity and N : P on N-rich toxins by both an N-fixing and non-N-fixing cyanobacteria

Felicia S. Osburn et al.

Summary: Freshwater ecosystems are being affected by increased salinization, and the hydrologic transport of harmful algal blooms (HABs) to coastal areas contributes to the interaction between eutrophication and salinization. This study found that the growth, elemental composition, and cyanotoxin production/release of two common HAB genera, Microcystis aeruginosa and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, were influenced by the interaction between nutrients and salinity. The results highlight the importance of ecophysiological differences in N-acquisition traits in controlling cyanotoxin production and release across freshwater and marine environments.

Summary: This study provides experimental evidence for the significant grazing effect of zooplankton on phytoplankton in brackish lakes, especially at low fish density and salinities below 8 parts per thousand. However, grazing in summer was generally low in most lakes, likely due to high predation pressure on zooplankton.

Interactive effects of increasing chloride concentration and warming on freshwater plankton communities

Alexandra McClymont et al.

Summary: Chloride concentrations in lakes across the Northern hemisphere are increasing due to road salt use, posing a threat to aquatic ecosystems. This study found that in addition to chloride concentration, factors such as soft water or increasing lake temperatures also negatively affect freshwater zooplankton and phytoplankton communities. The results suggest that regulations on road salt application should be reevaluated to better protect aquatic ecosystems.

Restoring shallow lakes impaired by eutrophication: Approaches, outcomes, and challenges

Jonathan M. Abell et al.

Summary: This review examines approaches used in addressing eutrophication in shallow lakes and evaluates a set of case studies. It finds that reducing external nutrient loads is a crucial component of successful restoration, although supplementary measures can also support restoration goals. However, restoring shallow lakes faces various challenges, including insufficient reductions in external nutrient loads, biogeochemical lags, resistance to change in stable algal-dominated states, delayed macrophyte reestablishment, climate change, lake-specific approaches, and social and political obstacles.

Summary: The study found that the salinity of lakes in northeastern China is mainly influenced by arid climatic conditions and transfer functions can be established to study the relationship between salinity, precipitation, and evaporation. Carbonates are the dominant salts in most lakes and reservoirs studied, with past salinity variations likely reflected by changes in HCO3- and CO32- concentrations.

Convergency and Stability Responses of Bacterial Communities to Salinization in Arid and Semiarid Areas: Implications for Global Climate Change in Lake Ecosystems

Yang Hu et al.

Summary: Climate change has led to salinization and nutrient enrichment in lake ecosystems, affecting bacterial communities. This study found that salinization has a greater impact on bacterial communities compared to nutrient enrichment. Salinization leads to convergent response of bacterial communities and alters interspecific interactions. The study also revealed the different patterns of topological parameters of bacterial communities in different salinity environments.

Spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton composition and biomass in Lake Bunyonyi, South-Western Uganda

Alex Saturday et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton species composition and biomass in Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. The study found that the lake contains a diverse range of phytoplankton species, with cyanobacteria and chlorophytes being the dominant groups. The presence of certain toxic cyanobacteria species poses potential challenges to water quality management. The unequal distribution of phytoplankton species in the lake and the high percentage of previously unreported species highlight the importance of regular monitoring and the establishment of a dedicated committee for water management.

Phytoplankton community structure of Tang-Pu Reservoir: status and ecological assessment in relation to physicochemical variability

Beryl Ochieng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal variation in phytoplankton community structure within Tang-Pu Reservoir in relation to physicochemical and hydrological characteristics. The results showed that the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton gradually increased over the three study seasons, with the peak in spring. The phytoplankton community comprised of 7 phyla, 80 genera, and 210 species, with dominant phyla being Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cyanophyta. The density and biomass of phytoplankton varied among sampling sites and seasons, with higher values observed in spring. pH, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, transparency, chlorophyll a, dissolve oxygen, and water temperature were identified as important factors influencing the community structure of phytoplankton. Additionally, a decreasing trend in phytoplankton abundance from the river area (inlet) to the lake (outlet) was observed.

Summary: Human activities threaten freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem function. This study examined the spatial variations in plankton communities in 40 lakes of the Yangtze River Basin and found that these variations were influenced by factors such as trophic status and environmental heterogeneity. The results suggest that eutrophication, leading to increased trophic status and decreased environmental dissimilarity, may weaken the trophic cascading effects in planktonic food chains.

The Structuring Effects of Salinity and Nutrient Status on Zooplankton Communities and Trophic Structure in Siberian Lakes

Egor Zadereev et al.

Summary: Many continental saline lakes are affected by increasing salinity and anthropogenic eutrophication, which have negative impacts on ecosystem functioning and water quality. The interactive effects of salinity and eutrophication vary depending on the size and depth of the lakes. Deep stratified lakes tend to have better water quality, while small shallow lakes are more vulnerable to the joint effect of salinity increase and eutrophication.

Phytoplankton functional composition determines limitation by nutrients and grazers across a lake productivity gradient

Marika A. Schulhof et al.

Summary: Functional trade-offs play a key role in determining the diversity of communities and the changes in species composition along environmental gradients. A trade-off between predator defense and resource competitive ability could maintain diversity in lake phytoplankton. Trade-offs may promote diversity in communities where grazing- and resource-limited taxa coexist, which affects whether communities are more resource- or consumer-controlled.

Lake warming intensifies the seasonal pattern of internal nutrient cycling in the eutrophic lake and potential impacts on algal blooms

Tong Yindong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of lake warming on the internal nutrient cycling in eutrophic lakes using data from Lake Chaohu in China. It found that internal nutrient loading plays a key role in the seasonal variations of nutrient concentrations in the lake, and predicted that lake warming could lead to stronger seasonal fluctuations of internal loading, creating conditions for longer cyanobacteria blooms. These findings can help improve mitigation strategies for eutrophic lake restoration.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

Yuanyuan Mo et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in salinity alters plankton community composition and decreases diversity. Salinity change influences community assembly through regulating the balance between deterministic and stochastic processes, with higher robustness of core plankton subnetworks at low-salinity levels and satellite subnetworks at medium-/high-salinity levels. The results suggest that even small increases in salinity at low levels can exert selective pressure on microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanisms and network stability.
