A balanced watershed decomposition method for rain-on-grid simulations in HEC-RAS

Sleimane Hariri et al.

Summary: This article introduces the rain-on-grid simulations for 2D unsteady flows using the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) software. The simulations are implemented through finite volume method and sparse parallel linear solver. A new partition method based on flow accumulation information and a domain decomposition method combining 2D sub-unit meshes and 1D channels are proposed to achieve better balance and computational load in large catchment modeling. The partition methods are demonstrated using the French Saar catchment as a case study, showing good agreements with available data in terms of discharge and flood maps.

Land use/land cover and change detection mapping in Rahuri watershed area (MS), India using the google earth engine and machine learning approach

Chaitanya B. Pande

Summary: This study focuses on mapping land use and land cover changes, NDVI, and change detection maps, which have direct impacts on ecosystems, land resources, cropping patterns, and agriculture. A soft computing machine learning algorithm is developed based on the Google Earth Engine platform and SAGA GIS software. The experimental results show an increase in agricultural and built-up land, as well as degraded land, fallow land, and waterbodies areas in the Rahuri area.

Global 10 m Land Use Land Cover Datasets: A Comparison of Dynamic World, World Cover and Esri Land Cover

Zander S. Venter et al.

Summary: This study compares and evaluates global land use and land cover maps from Google, ESA, and Esri, finding a strong spatial correspondence among water, built area, trees, and crops. However, there are biases in estimating certain categories. Based on global and European ground truth data, Esri has the highest accuracy, especially in capturing details, while WC has the highest accuracy in European data. The study also emphasizes the importance of evaluating the suitability of these maps based on their application purpose and considering trade-offs between thematic resolution and accuracy.

Assessment of land-use and land-cover changes in Pangari watershed area (MS), India, based on the remote sensing and GIS techniques

Chaitanya B. Pande et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the assessment of land-use and land-cover change detection mapping in order to effectively plan and manage environment, land-use policy, and hydrological system in the study area. The results show changes in land-use and land-cover classes and vegetation after the implementation of a soil and water conservation project for five years. The use of remote sensing and GIS techniques played a crucial role in analyzing land-use and land-cover mapping during different years, providing valuable information for policy-making and management.

Is HEC-RAS 2D accurate enough for storm-event hazard assessment? Lessons learnt from a benchmarking study based on rain-on-grid modelling

Pierfranco Costabile et al.

Summary: Rain-on-Grid (RoG) modelling is a popular approach in storm risk management, but systematic benchmarking studies of software packages like HEC-RAS 2D (HR2D) are lacking. This paper introduces the novelty of benchmarking HR2D for RoG simulations and provides evidence of its potential and limitations to increase model accuracy.

Measuring and modeling event-based environmental flows: An assessment of HEC-RAS 2D rain-on-grid simulations

Sean J. Zeiger et al.

Summary: The study conducted model performance assessment using observed data and found the potential usefulness of coupling SWAT and HEC-RAS using an integrated modeling approach. Calibration results demonstrated the accuracy of the system under specific conditions, while validation results showed the model's adaptability in different scenarios.

Impact of Geospatial Data Enhancements for Regional-Scale 2D Hydrodynamic Flood Modeling: Case Study for the Coastal Plain of Virginia

Mohamed M. Morsy et al.

Summary: Hydrology in low-relief coastal plains presents challenges in flood modeling applications, requiring 2D hydrodynamic models. This study found that incorporating high-resolution terrain and land use datasets only slightly improved model accuracy, while introducing river cross-section data and improving QC methods for rainfall data resulted in significantly greater improvements in accuracy.

Thematic accuracy assessment of the NLCD 2016 land cover for the conterminous United States

James Wickham et al.

Summary: NLCD is an operational land cover monitoring program in the United States, with data collected every five years. The accuracy of land cover components in the NLCD2016 database was assessed using reference data for 2011 and 2016, showing overall accuracies around 72% for Level II and 79% for Level I components. The changes in mapping methodologies for NLCD2016 led to improved product quality compared to NLCD2011, with overall accuracies 4% to 7% higher.

A Systematic Analysis of the Interaction between Rain-on-Grid-Simulations and Spatial Resolution in 2D Hydrodynamic Modeling

Amrei David et al.

Summary: A study systematically analyzed the model behavior of HEC-RAS with a focus on spatial resolution, using the rain-on-grid approach in a small area in Central Germany. It recommended a mesh resolution between 3m to 5m and a DEM resolution from 0.25m to 1m for this size and type of catchment, showing scale effects on flooded areas for coarser meshing.
