Effect of Shelterbelt Construction on Soil Water Characteristic Curves in an Extreme Arid Shifting Desert

Chuanyu Ma et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of artificial shelterbelt construction with saline irrigation on the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) of shifting sandy soil in extreme arid desert areas. The results showed that the construction of an artificial shelterbelt improved soil water-holding capacity and had the most significant impacts on the surface soil. The influence of organic matter and salinity should be considered when establishing soil water transfer function.

Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain Monte Carlo Approach to Simulate van Genuchten Model Parameters for Soil Water Retention Curve

Xuan Du et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method for estimating soil water retention curve (SWRC) parameters using a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm of the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MH-MCMC) approach. The results show that this MH-MCMC approach is more robust and accurate compared to traditional methods, especially when data for a limited range of matric potential are available.

Rainfall Threshold for Shallow Landslide Triggering Due to Rising Water Table

Antonello Troncone et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simple-to-use method for predicting the occurrence of shallow landslides due to rainfall. The method combines the evaluation of pore water pressure changes caused by infiltration with the calculation of the critical value of pore water pressure using the infinite slope scheme. It requires only a few input parameters, which can be obtained from conventional tests.

Bayesian selection of slope hydraulic model and identification of model parameters using monitoring data and subset simulation

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for determining slope hydraulic models and soil hydraulic parameters using a probabilistic back analysis approach, which identifies the most suitable hydraulic model and the most probable parameters simultaneously using slope monitoring data. This approach significantly improves the quantification of uncertainties in predicting pore water pressure responses during rainstorms.

Spatiotemporal variations of fatal landslides in Turkey

Tolga Gorum et al.

Summary: Landslides are devastating geohazards causing extensive socio-economic and environmental damages. This study in Turkey reveals an increasing dominance of human activities in fatal landslide rates, with distinct hotspot zones in the Eastern Black Sea and Marmara Region. The research also suggests potential impacts of economic crisis and political stability on fatal landslide trends.

Estimation of wetting hydraulic conductivity function for unsaturated sandy soil

Qian Zhai et al.

Summary: Rainfall-induced slope failures are mainly caused by infiltrated rainwater reducing soil shear strength. This study proposes a method for estimating the hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) of unsaturated soil during the wetting process based on the drying soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). The estimation considers ink-bottle and rain-drop effects on the hysteresis of SWCC and was verified using experimental data from published literature.

Evaluation of techniques for mitigating snowmelt infiltration-induced landsliding in a highway embankment

Eric S. Hinds et al.

Summary: The study found that seasonal failures at the Straight Creek landslide were caused by rapid infiltration of snowmelt and differences in hydraulic conductivity between slope materials and the highway embankment. Remediation designs such as lightweight caissons and horizontal drains were implemented, but their effectiveness was limited by the low hydraulic conductivity of subsurface materials. Results suggest that an alternative drain design intercepting subsurface flow could improve stability during critical periods.
