Cylindrospermopsin impairs zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryo development

A. C. N. Moraes et al.

Summary: This study characterized the developmental effects of CYN using zebrafish larvae as a model organism. Exposure to CYN resulted in decreased growth, increased developmental abnormalities, and changes in gene expression related to thyroid function and oxidative stress. These results highlight the multiple effects of environmentally relevant CYN concentrations on zebrafish embryos.

Cylindrospermopsin Disrupts Estrous Cycle and Increases Spermatogenesis in Mice

Adriana Carvalho Natal de Moraes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the in vivo effects of Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) on the reproductive systems of mice. It found that CYN disrupted the estrous cycle and progesterone levels in females, while increasing testosterone levels and spermatozoa count in males, suggesting potential infertility. This is the first report showing the impacts of CYN on mammalian reproductive system, posing a threat to human and environmental health.

Challenges of using blooms of Microcystis spp. in animal feeds: A comprehensive review of nutritional, toxicological and microbial health evaluation

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: Microcystis spp. are photosynthetic prokaryotes that can convert CO2 and minerals into organic compounds and biomass. While considered as a potential protein source for animal feeds, Microcystis also produce cyanobacterial toxins that present health hazards. Further research on nutritional value and safety is needed before incorporating Microcystis into animal feed ingredients.

Microcystin-leucine arginine induced the apoptosis of GnRH neurons by activating the endoplasmic reticulum stress resulting in a decrease of serum testosterone level in mice

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: MC-LR, a toxin produced by cyanobacterial, leads to decreased testosterone levels and apoptosis of GnRH neurons. Exposure to MC-LR increases intracellular ROS production and Ca2+ release, as well as activates ER stress and autophagy. Pre-treatment with ER stress inhibitor reduces apoptosis, while pre-treatment with autophagy inhibitor increases apoptosis in cells exposed to MC-LR.

The latest advances in the reproductive toxicity of microcystin-LR

Shiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: MC-LR is an emerging environmental pollutant produced by cyanobacteria that poses a threat to wildlife and human health by damaging reproductive organs and causing trans-generational and developmental toxicity. The mechanisms of MC-LR-induced reproductive toxicity mainly include the inhibition of protein phosphatase activity and the induction of oxidative stress, with potential involvement of epigenetic modifications. Additional research is needed to further understand the estrogenic effects of MC-LR and its impact on reproductive health.

Cylindrospermopsin directly disrupts spermatogenesis in isolated male zebrafish testis

A. C. N. Moraes et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to CYN led to a decrease in cell types from all three phases of spermatogenesis in zebrafish testis, as well as significant changes in fshr, 1hr, and igf3 transcript levels, and testosterone secretion. These results provide important insights into the adverse effects of CYN on testicular spermatogenesis and male reproduction in fish.

Effect of paternal exposure to microcystin-LR on testicular dysfunction, reproduction, and offspring immune response in the oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense)

Shengming Sun et al.

Summary: Microcystin-LR poses a threat to aquatic animal reproduction and can be transferred from male prawns to their offspring, causing immune disorders and abnormal development. Exposure to Microcystin-LR results in increased mortality and decreased immune and antioxidant abilities in F1 larvae. Continued exposure to Microcystin-LR leads to mitochondrial apoptosis and cross-generational immunotoxicity in untreated prawns.

Effects of acute exposure to microcystins on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA), -gonad (HPG) and -thyroid (HPT) axes of female rats

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: This study for the first time investigated the effects of exposure to MC-LR on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad, and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axes in rats. Exposure to MC-LR led to endocrine-disrupting effects, including alterations in hormone concentrations and gene transcription. Further studies are needed to explore the crosstalk among these three axes.

Immunotoxic Effects Induced by Microcystins and Cylindrospermopsin: A Review

Leticia Diez-Quijada et al.

Summary: The impact of cyanotoxins on the immune system is not yet fully elucidated, but studies have shown that they may lead to altered functions of immune cells and abnormal levels of cytokines. Reports on the immunotoxicity of MCs and CYN are scarce, indicating a need for further research in this area.

The joint effect of parental exposure to microcystin-LR and polystyrene nanoplastics on the growth of zebrafish offspring

Junli Zuo et al.

Summary: The coexposure of PSNPs and MCLR increased the transfer of MCLR to offspring and exacerbated growth inhibition of F1 larvae. This coexposure decreased thyroid hormone levels by altering HPT axis-related gene expression, eventually leading to growth inhibition of F1 larvae. PSNPs and MCLR coexposure also affected key genes of the GH/IGF axis, indicating a potential target for growth inhibition in F1 larvae.
