Impacts of Permafrost Degradation on Hydrology and Vegetation in the Source Area of the Yellow River on Northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Southwest China

Xiaoying Jin et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the degradation of permafrost in the Source Area of the Yellow River (SAYR) due to climate change and human activities. The study focuses on the impact of permafrost degradation on hydrology, wetlands, lakes, and vegetation. The results show that as a result of permafrost thaw, surface water decreases while groundwater storage increases, leading to a reduction in wetland and lake areas. The paper recommends further research on snow cover and carbon emissions related to permafrost degradation, and the establishment of long-term monitoring networks for mountain cryosphere, ecology, hydrology, eco-hydrology, cryo-hydrogeology, and carbon fluxes.

Spatiotemporal Evolution Characteristics and the Climatic Response of Carbon Sources and Sinks in the Chinese Grassland Ecosystem from 2010 to 2020

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: With the increasing global carbon dioxide emissions, China has proposed the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality (double carbon) and formulated an action plan to enhance the carbon sink capacity of the ecosystem. However, there is a lack of research on carbon sources and sinks in the Chinese grassland ecosystem (CGE), thus it is urgent to integrate and analyze them on a national scale. This study estimated the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of the CGE and found a high differentiation in the northwest and low in the southeast of China. The results showed that precipitation positively correlated with NEP while temperature negatively correlated with it.

Spatiotemporal Variations of Vegetation Net Primary Productivity and Its Response to Meteorological Factors Across the Yellow River Basin During the Period 1981-2020

Hongwei Tian et al.

Summary: Based on trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and Mann-Kendall test, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of net primary productivity (NPP) in the Yellow River Basin and their responses to meteorological factors. The results showed that NPP had high values in the mid-south part and low values in the northwestern part of the basin. NPP exhibited a significant increasing trend over the study period, positively correlated with annual mean temperature and annual precipitation, and negatively correlated with annual sunshine hours.

Multi-factor decomposition and multi-scenario prediction decoupling analysis of China's carbon emission under dual carbon goal

Junhong Hao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hierarchical framework for the decomposition, evaluation, prediction, and decoupling analysis of carbon emissions in China. By applying different methods, the study quantifies and evaluates China's carbon emissions and predicts future trends. The results show that reducing energy consumption and increasing the proportion of renewable energy can achieve China's carbon emission peak and strong decoupling of carbon emissions, economic growth, and social development.

The Change in Net Ecosystem Productivity and its Driving Mechanism in a Mountain Ecosystem of Arid Regions, Northwest China

Chuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) to climate change and human interference in the Qilian Mountains (QLM), Northwest China. The NEP in the QLM has shown a significant increase over the past 20 years, with a growing carbon sink region. Natural environment factors and climate factors are the major determinants of NEP spatial distribution, with their interaction enhancing the influence on NEP. Climate factors have strong direct and indirect positive influences on NEP, while human activity intensity has a medium indirectly negative effect. The contributions of human activity intensity, climatic factors, and natural environment on NEP change in the QLM were 33.5%, 62.3%, and 38.3%, respectively.

Multiscale Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Soil Erosion and Its Influencing Factors in the Yellow River Basin

Zuotang Yin et al.

Summary: This study discusses the spatiotemporal characteristics of soil erosion and its influencing factors in the Yellow River Basin using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and Optimal Parameters-based Geographical Detector (OPGD). The results show that soil erosion is severe in the YRB, mainly concentrated in Gansu, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces. Factors such as fractional vegetation cover, landform type, and land use/land cover have a strong explanatory power for soil erosion. Human activities are increasingly influencing soil erosion, especially at small scales.

Summary: The study introduces a new terrestrial carbon cycle data assimilation system that can synthesize multiple streams of information to understand and predict carbon pools and fluxes. The system utilizes novel Bayesian methods and ensemble filters to provide comprehensive and robust uncertainty estimation for carbon models. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the system in accurately capturing the dynamics of different carbon pools and fluxes.

Climate Change Decreased Net Ecosystem Productivity in the Arid Region of Central Asia

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study combines models and empirical approaches to evaluate NEP in Central Asia and finds that NEP is sensitive to climate factors, with NPP more sensitive to precipitation and RH and NEP more sensitive to temperature. Climate change has damaged NEP in the Central Asian ecosystem, and varying degrees of warming under different climate scenarios will further exacerbate the expansion of carbon source areas in Central Asia.

Summary: This study analyzed the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to net primary productivity (NPP) in China using a two-step methodology based on RESTREND. Results showed a significant increase in NPP during the study period, with both climate change and human activities playing favorable roles in vegetation growth. Climate factors contributed 60.06% to vegetation changes, while human activities contributed 39.94% to NPP. Precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and other climatic factors all had varying impacts on vegetation growth in different regions of China.
