A Cost-Effective Method for Reconstructing City-Building 3D Models from Sparse Lidar Point Clouds

Marek Kulawiak

Summary: The recent popularization of airborne lidar scanners has made it possible to measure and process features such as bare earth surface and building heights. This paper proposes a novel method of reconstructing 3D building shapes from sparse point cloud data and optimizes it for dealing with complex structures commonly found in buildings from the Renaissance era.

A NEW FRAMEWORK FOR ACCURACY ASSESSMENT OF LIDAR-DERIVED DIGITAL ELEVATION MODELS

XiaoHang Liu

Summary: This paper presents a new framework for assessing the accuracy of LiDAR-derived DEMs. In addition to vertical accuracy, the framework also focuses on the ability of the DEM to preserve the elevation rank of points in the bare earth topographic surface. New methods are introduced to assess each aspect. The framework and methods produce detailed mapping of error distribution, allowing for identification of main sources of error and areas that require improvement.

The Effect of LiDAR Sampling Density on DTM Accuracy for Areas with Heavy Forest Cover

Mihnea Cateanu et al.

Summary: This paper conducted a quantitative analysis of the accuracy of DTMs obtained from LiDAR data using three different interpolation algorithms. The results showed that LiDAR can still provide relatively good accuracy even with reduced sampling density, as long as an appropriate interpolation algorithm is used. The study highlights the importance of point data density in ground surface modeling accuracy and the significant impact of interpolation algorithms on the results.
