COSMIC-2 RO Profile Ending at PBL Top with Strong Vertical Gradient of Refractivity

Xu Xu et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the observed lowest altitude in the atmosphere and refractivity gradients and planetary boundary layer heights using radio occultation data from Formosa Satellite-7/Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate-2 (Satellite-7/COSMIC-2). The study finds strong local vertical gradients occur more frequently over the Southeast Pacific region, and the presence of strong horizontal refractivity gradients can also limit observations at lower altitudes.

On the distribution of helicity in the tropical cyclone boundary layer from dropsonde composites

Nuo Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes GPS dropsonde data to investigate the boundary layer structure in tropical cyclones, focusing on helicity distribution. A helicity-based method for boundary layer height is developed and compared to other height scales, showing that the boundary layer height defined by helicity is closest to the height of the maximum tangential wind speed. Radial variations of boundary layer heights are confirmed, and kinematic height scales generally decrease with storm intensity.

An Analysis Study of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 Radio Occultation Data in the Troposphere

Shu-Ya Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the GNSS RO data from FS7/C2, which provides more and deeper profiles at lower latitudes. Comparisons with other observations show that FS7/C2 RO data are reliable with small deviations. The study also revealed the presence of the intertropical convergence zone in the comparisons.

Raytracing Simulated GPS Radio Wave Propagation Paths Experiencing Large Disturbances When Going through the Top of the Sub-Cloud Layer

Shengpeng Yang et al.

Summary: The impact parameter of GPS radio waves reaching the tropical lower troposphere is affected by small-scale water vapor fluctuations. Disturbances to the impact parameter arise when ray paths go through the top of the sub-cloud layer, where humidity decreases with height and wet refractivity has a strong local vertical gradient. The disturbances are confined to an area about 250 km horizontally and 4 km vertically from the perigee point.

Relationships of along-the-track local variations of GPS RO impact parameter to strong local vertical gradient of wet refractivity in the tropics

Shengpeng Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that water vapor in the tropical lower troposphere has a stronger impact on atmospheric refractivity fields, especially when the impact height is below 5 kilometers. This impact is mostly caused by strong local vertical gradients within 300 km of their perigee positions and occurs more frequently in the presence of stratocumulus clouds.
