Satellite Laser Altimetry Reveals a Net Water Mass Gain in Global Lakes With Spatial Heterogeneity in the Early 21st Century

Shuangxiao Luo et al.

Summary: Lake water storage changes play a crucial role in the climate, hydrological cycle, and environments. Using satellite data from ICESat and ICESat-2, researchers have studied the water level and volume changes in global natural lakes larger than 10 km(2) from 2003 to 2020. They found that, overall, the total water storage in these lakes increased during the studied period. However, large lakes under dry and high water-stress conditions experienced significant water loss. The findings suggest that these drying lakes may continue to shrink in the future due to climate change and increasing water demands.

Monitoring and Analysis of Water Level Changes in Mekong River from ICESat-2 Spaceborne Laser Altimetry

Jieying Lao et al.

Summary: The monitoring and analysis of the water level in the Mekong River using ICESat-2 spaceborne laser altimetry is important for water resources security and management. The study found that the ATL13 products provided high precision and low measurement uncertainty for river water level data. The analysis also showed that water level changes were influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors, with hydropower development mitigating uneven distribution characteristics of water resources in the Mekong basin.

Satellite observed recent rising water levels of global lakes and reservoirs

Nan Xu et al.

Summary: This study used ICESat and ICESat-2 altimetry data to investigate global water level changes for 22,008 lakes/reservoirs greater than 1 km2. The results showed that 77.56% of the lakes/reservoirs experienced rising water levels from 2003 to 2021. Globally, 78.84% of lakes exhibited a rising water level, while the proportion for reservoirs was only 56.01%. Large-scale rising water levels were detected in the Tibetan Plateau, the Mississippi River basin, and high-latitude regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The study also found a negative relationship between the percentage of water level rise and population density in global river basins and 11 hotspots. The findings suggest that natural processes contribute to the rising inland water levels, while human activities can balance the rise through reservoir regulation. The study highlights the underestimation of global water level rise by existing datasets and emphasizes the importance of including small lakes/reservoirs in studying global hydrological cycle and water resource management.

Water Level Change of Qinghai Lake from ICESat and ICESat-2 Laser Altimetry

Weixiao Han et al.

Summary: Long-term satellite observations of lake water levels are crucial for understanding lake hydrological basin systems. This study employed ICESat and ICESat-2 satellites to monitor the water level of Qinghai Lake. The results showed that ICESat-2 provided more accurate measurements compared to ICESat. The study also applied reference ellipsoid and geoid transfer equations to convert the water level to the WGS84 and EGM2008 geoid.

ICESat-2 Based River Surface Slope and Its Impact on Water Level Time Series From Satellite Altimetry

Daniel Scherer et al.

Summary: The water surface slope (WSS) of rivers is crucial for flow velocity and discharge estimation. Altimetry missions' range measurements can be corrected using ICESat-2's lidar sensor to derive water level time series. ICESat-2 provides accurate measurements of WSS in small and wide rivers. The study shows that ICESat-2 can estimate average WSS with a median absolute error of 23 mm/km for 89% of the studied reaches, and the correction of WSS improves the measurement accuracy at virtual stations in the hydrological database.

Evaluation of historic and operational satellite radar altimetry missions for constructing consistent long-term lake water level records

Song Shu et al.

Summary: A total of 13 satellite missions with radar altimeters have been launched since 1985. This study evaluates the performance of different retracking algorithms on lake water level estimates and finds that model-free retracking algorithms outperform model-based retracking algorithms. Sentinel-3 and SARAL provide the best results among the satellite altimetry missions. The best strategy for constructing long-term lake water level records is a two-step bias correction and normalization procedure, using a consistent TOPEX/Poseidon-Jason series as a reference.
