Applicability evaluation of Landsat-8 for estimating low concentration colored dissolved organic matter in inland water

Jiang Chen et al.

Summary: Inland waters play a vital role in the carbon budget, and tracing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) using colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is crucial. However, accurately estimating CDOM concentration through remote sensing remains challenging, especially for low concentration CDOM. This study explores the applicability of Landsat-8 for estimating low concentration CDOM in inland waters, and develops a model that shows good performance. The results demonstrate that Landsat-8 and the developed model are useful for monitoring low concentration CDOM.

Consistency evaluation of landsat-7 and landsat-8 for improved monitoring of colored dissolved organic matter in complex water

Jiang Chen et al.

Summary: A series of Landsat satellites are commonly used to monitor water quality in complex water, but a single Landsat satellite may not provide enough information due to its long revisit time and frequent cloud cover. Therefore, it is sometimes necessary to combine the images from multiple satellites. In this study, the consistency of Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 in estimating CDOM was evaluated using a large number of paired samples, and a new Landsat-7 CDOM remote sensing model was established. The results show that the two satellites have good consistency and by combining their data, the observation frequency can be increased, providing more detailed information for monitoring water quality.

An Integrated Model of Summer and Winter for Chlorophyll-a Retrieval in the Pearl River Estuary Based on Hyperspectral Data

Haitao Li et al.

Summary: This study established a Chla retrieval model for the Pearl River Estuary using hyperspectral data and corresponding Chla concentrations, taking into account different seasons and water turbidity. The results showed that the first-derivative of 680 nm is the optimal band for estimating Chla in the estuary. Additionally, a multispectral model based on the slope difference index method was developed to overcome the spectral resolution problem in satellite image retrieval, achieving good performance.

Sedimentation of psbA Gene-Containing Cyanophages, Cyanobacteria, and Eukaryotes in Marine and Estuarine Sediments

Maoqiu He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diversity of psbA gene-containing microorganisms in marine sediments, revealing the prevalence and diversity of psbA gene regardless of water depth. Phylogenetic analysis showed the presence of various microorganisms including cyanophages, cyanobacteria, and eukaryotic algae in sediments. The study suggests the potential prevalence of downward transport of cyanophages from the photic zone to the seafloor, and highlights the importance of these microorganisms in carbon cycling.

Morphodynamic Controls for Growth and Evolution of a Rubble Coral Island

Lara Talavera et al.

Summary: Rubble islands are dynamic sedimentary features on reef platforms, providing valuable land for small island nations and critical habitat for species, but facing threats from climate change. The evolution of One Tree Island (OTI) is influenced by factors such as cyclone activity, El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases, and mechanisms involving sediment transport and wave overtopping. Further research is needed to understand the future trajectory of OTI and other rubble islands under climate change scenarios.

Nima Pahlevan et al.

Summary: Atmospheric correction over inland and coastal waters remains a challenge in aquatic remote sensing, and the ACIX-Aqua project evaluated 8 AC processors. Data from the Community Validation Database and AERONET-OC showed differing performance of AC processors in different aquatic environments, highlighting the need for improving atmospheric correction for better quality downstream products in freshwater and coastal ecosystems.
