Accelerated decline of snow cover in China from 1979 to 2018 observed from space

Linglong Zhu et al.

Summary: Snow cover is an important indicator of climate change. This study investigated the variation of snow parameters in China using space-based observational evidence. The results show that there is a downward trend in snow depth in high altitude mountains and an upward trend in plains. The snow cover days have decreased in North China and Northern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), but the QTP still maintains the longest snow season. The snow storage has also shown a decreasing trend in all three snow areas, with different phenological characteristics.

Seasonal Distribution of Atmospheric Coarse and Fine Particulate Matter in a Medium-Sized City of Northern China

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study continuously measured atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in an urban area in Baoji city, northern China, in 2018 to investigate its seasonal distribution characteristics. The findings revealed that coarse PM (PM2.5-10) was more prevalent in spring due to regional dust transport. Winter saw a substantial increase in the number and mass concentrations of fine PM (PM2.5), possibly due to enhanced secondary production processes and coal combustion. The study highlighted the influence of precursor gaseous pollutants and meteorology on PM distributions, with fine PM being more strongly associated with gas pollutants than coarse PM.

Effects of natural and anthropogenic factors and their interactions on dust events in Northern China

Xiaomeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of dust event frequencies and quantitatively investigated the impacts of meteorological conditions, anthropogenic factors, and their interactions on dust events using the geographical detector model in Northern China. Results revealed that the frequency of dust events significantly decreased over time, with seasonal variations in the impacts of meteorological conditions and anthropogenic factors. Strong winds and soil surface conditions were main drivers of dust events in spring, while anthropogenic factors had significant impacts in summer and autumn, and frozen period and relative humidity were major factors in winter. The interactions between natural and anthropogenic factors enhanced their impacts on the occurrence of dust events, showing great spatial and seasonal disparities over different vegetation regions.

Summary: China is facing serious desertification issues, but large-scale ecological restoration projects have been implemented to combat them. Research indicates that as desertification worsens, vegetation response to restoration efforts increases, with non-climatic factors driving the majority of the change. The effectiveness of the restoration projects varies across different desert regions, highlighting the need for more targeted or alternative ecological restoration approaches in certain areas.

Tracking prevailing dust aerosol over the air pollution in central China with integrated satellite and ground observations

Minghui Tao et al.

Summary: Based on integrated satellite and ground observations, this study provides a comprehensive insight into the sources, transport process, and potential influence of prevalent dust particles in central China during October 2020. The research reveals that dust sources are active during fall, with thick dust layers being carried by predominant northwestern winds to northern China and even the Sichuan Basin. The slow dust-pollution mixing process in central China can last for as long as 3-4 days due to temperature inversion, highlighting the importance of paying attention to these unnoticeable but frequent dust plumes in regional atmospheric environment and climate effects.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation greenness in Xinjiang province over the past 20 years using gradual trend analysis, abrupt change analysis, and machine learning methods. It was found that vegetation has overall recovered, with cropland, grassland, and sparse vegetation being the main areas of restoration. The increase in vegetation greenness was mainly attributed to CO2 concentration, cropland expansion, and desertification control.

Summary: Satellite-based estimation of dust mass concentration (DMC) is crucial for global biogeochemical cycle assessment of dust aerosols.
