Drying-Wetting Changes of Surface Soil Moisture and the Influencing Factors in Permafrost Regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Summary: This study analyzed and explored the characteristics and influencing factors of soil moisture (SM) change in different permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). The results show that global climate change has a more significant impact on the seasonal permafrost region, and temperature, precipitation, and vegetation are the main factors affecting SM changes.

Evaluation of soil thermal conductivity schemes incorporated into CLM5.0 in permafrost regions on the Tibetan Plateau

Shuhua Yang et al.

Summary: Soil thermal conductivity (STC) is an important parameter for understanding thermal changes in soil, especially in permafrost regions. Different STC schemes incorporated into land surface process models (LSMs) can lead to large errors. This study evaluated nine normalized STC schemes in simulating soil thermal regimes on the Tibetan Plateau and found that the scheme including minerals, soil organic matter, and gravel soil performed the best. The BA2005 scheme showed the best performance among the selected schemes.

Summary: This study monitored surface deformation along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway using the MTS-InSAR method and proposed a new method for permafrost distribution mapping. Results showed that most areas were relatively stable, while some sections prone to geological hazards were identified.

Active layer thickness as a function of soil water content

Leah K. Clayton et al.

Summary: The influence of soil moisture on the active layer thickness (ALT) in permafrost areas is determined by the competing hypotheses of increased latent heat of fusion and increased soil thermal conductivity. Analysis of the Field Measurements of Soil Moisture and Active Layer Thickness (SMALT) dataset in Alaska and Canada reveals that bulk volumetric water content affects ALT by influencing both latent heat and thermal conductivity, with regional temperature variations playing a role in baseline thaw depth.

On the freeze-thaw cycles of shallow soil and connections with environmental factors over the Tibetan Plateau

Ning Li et al.

Summary: Changes in freeze-thaw cycles of shallow soil on the Tibetan Plateau have been studied using in-situ soil temperature observations from July 1982 to June 2017. The results show that altitude and latitude combined explain the spatial patterns well, surface air temperature strongly influences the shallow soil freeze-thaw status, and a multiple-consecutive-day approach is more robust. Further improvement is needed for gridded soil temperature products to accurately reflect the observed shallow soil freeze-thaw status spatial pattern.

A method for solving heat transfer with phase change in ice or soil that allows for large time steps while guaranteeing energy conservation

Niccolo Tubini et al.

Summary: This study proposes an algorithm to accurately simulate heat transfer with phase change in the cryosphere, ensuring convergence and energy conservation for any time step size. By developing a conservative formulation of governing equations and applying the NCZ algorithm, the solver's convergence is guaranteed. This approach allows for the selection of integration time step to match the timescale of the processes being investigated.
