Water Use and Soil Water Balance of Mediterranean Vineyards under Rainfed and Drip Irrigation Management: Evapotranspiration Partition and Soil Management Modelling for Resource Conservation

Hanaa Darouich et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the water use and water balance in vineyards in Italy and Portugal, emphasizing the importance of crop and soil management in preserving soil and water resources. The use of computational tools to cope with climate variability is highlighted, along with the benefits of improved crop and soil management in countering land degradation and valuing natural resource conservation.

UAV-based vegetation monitoring for assessing the impact of soil loss in olive orchards in Brazil

Adnane Beniaich et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between vegetation indices and soil erosion using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images and soil sampling. The results showed that the total cover index performed well in predicting soil loss and determining the C-factor. Additionally, a second-order model accurately predicted the relationship between the total cover index and rainfall erosivity.

Using NDVI for the assessment of canopy cover in agricultural crops within modelling research

Tomas R. Tenreiro et al.

Summary: The fraction of green canopy cover is commonly used to characterize crop growth and calibrate models. This study conducted a meta-analysis on the NDVI-CC relationships and proposed generic models for different agricultural crops. The study found that the correlations were adequate and the overall applicability of these relationships to modeling is promising.

Fractional vegetation cover estimation in southern African rangelands using spectral mixture analysis and Google Earth Engine

L. M. Vermeulen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of publicly available satellite imagery, spectral mixture analysis, and cloud geoprocessing technologies for dynamic, continuous, and accurate estimation of fractional vegetation cover. The research provides a robust approach to FVC estimation using limited field data and open-source remote sensing imagery, with the potential to improve grassland productivity modeling for sustainable environmental and economical rangeland planning and management.

Effect of Soil Management on Erosion in Mountain Vineyards (N-W Italy)

Silvia Stanchi et al.

Summary: The study showed that permanent grassing significantly reduces soil erosion, while buffer strips have a similar effect to grassing; tractor passage accelerates the erosion process and leads to loss of land fertility. Future climate change may result in more frequent intense rainfall events, necessitating the limitation of soil erosion rates.

The role of cover crops in the loss of protected and non-protected soil organic carbon fractions due to water erosion in a Mediterranean olive grove

M. Lopez-Vicente et al.

Summary: The study showed that planting temporary cover crops in olive groves can reduce soil erosion, increase soil organic carbon fractions, especially the protected fraction. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the preferential loss of organic carbon fractions in olive groves, highlighting the need for further research and solutions.
