Measurement of diffuse and plane of array irradiance by a combination of a pyranometer and an all-sky imager

Niklas Benedikt Blum et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method using a thermopile pyranometer and an all-sky imager to measure diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) and global tilted irradiance (GTI). After validation at two sites, the method proves to be accurate and particularly suitable for measuring GTI.

The uncertainties involved in measuring national solar photovoltaic electricity generation

O. T. Huxley et al.

Summary: The measurement of near real-time national solar PV electricity output is crucial for managing electricity systems. Currently, national PV output is indirectly measured by upscaling the output from a sample of reference PV systems using an estimate of the national capacity. However, there are uncertainties in these measurements, particularly in the capacity error. To improve accuracy, nations must develop a comprehensive approach to PV system registration and explore alternative methods for estimating PV capacity.

A network of sky imagers for spatial solar irradiance assessment

Yinghao Chu et al.

Summary: A low-cost network of cameras has been installed in the Los Angeles basin for spatial solar irradiance assessments. An algorithm called Image to Irradiance (I2I) is proposed to derive high-resolution diffuse, direct, and global solar irradiance from sky images. The network of cameras provides more accurate spatially resolved Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) compared to satellite images when the distance to the nearest site is less than 40 km.

A Hybrid Solar Irradiance Nowcasting Approach: Combining All Sky Imager Systems and Persistence Irradiance Models for Increased Accuracy

Bijan Nouri et al.

Summary: The share of distributed solar power generation is growing, posing new challenges for stakeholders. Insufficient consideration of solar resource variabilities may lead to grid instabilities, emphasizing the importance of nowcasts. All sky imager systems provide highly resolved nowcasts, and combining them with persistence nowcasts can increase accuracy and reduce root mean square deviation.

Applying self-supervised learning for semantic cloud segmentation of all-sky images

Yann Fabel et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-supervised learning approach is proposed for the semantic segmentation of ground-based all-sky images, which provides high-resolution cloud coverage information for distinguishing different cloud types. By using deep neural networks and a large training dataset, the model achieves better segmentation results compared to conventional approaches.

Cloud height measurement by a network of all-sky imagers

Niklas Benedikt Blum et al.

Summary: This study introduces and validates a method to measure Cloud base height (CBH) using a network of all-sky imagers (ASIs) for enhanced accuracy. Research on 42 ASI pairs shows that ASI pairs with small camera distances are accurate for low clouds, while those with distances over 3 km provide smaller deviations for greater CBH. Using a network of ASIs at different distances proves to provide more accurate measurements of CBH under all cloud conditions compared to using a single ASI pair.
