Dual Influence of Climate Change and Anthropogenic Activities on the Spatiotemporal Vegetation Dynamics Over the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau From 1981 to 2015

Yanqiang Wei et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the growth status of vegetation on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and examines the impacts of climate change and human activities. The results indicate that the vegetation in central and southwestern QTP has improved due to the warm-humid climate trend, while human activities have mainly contributed to the degradation of vegetation in the northern and eastern regions.

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Permafrost at Risk in the Late 21st Century

Guofei Zhang et al.

Summary: Global warming is causing permafrost degradation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with projections showing significant loss of permafrost and changes in thermal regimes. The analysis indicates that the alpine permafrost on the plateau has low resilience to climate change.

Current state and past changes in frozen ground at the Third Pole: A research synthesis

You-Hua Ran et al.

Summary: This study provides basic statistical data on the current state and changes of frozen ground in the Third Pole region. Results show that the area of permafrost and seasonally frozen ground is approximately 1.27 x 106 km2 and 2.59 x 106 km2, respectively. The permafrost region is 50% larger than the permafrost area. Over the period of 1960s-2010s, permafrost in the Third Pole warmed at a rate of 0.17 degrees C per decade.

A comprehensive dataset of microbial abundance, dissolved organic carbon, and nitrogen in Tibetan Plateau glaciers

Yongqin Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a new dataset on microbial abundance, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total nitrogen (TN) in Tibetan Plateau glaciers. The dataset includes records from 12 glaciers for microbial abundance and 38 glaciers for DOC and TN, covering diverse geographic and climatic regions. This dataset provides valuable information for studying carbon and nitrogen cycles in glacial ecosystems and assessing the potential impacts of glacier retreat on downstream ecosystems under global warming.

Convective heat transfer of spring meltwater accelerates active layer phase change in Tibet permafrost areas

Yi Zhao et al.

Summary: Convective heat transfer (CHT) is an important process in permafrost areas, but it is often ignored in permafrost studies. This study applied the Simultaneous Heat and Water (SHAW) model to investigate the impacts of CHT on the thermal dynamics of the active layer in a permafrost site on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results showed that CHT mainly occurred during thaw periods in shallow and intermediate soil depths, with greater impacts on shallow soil temperatures during spring melting periods.

Utilizing the TTOP model to understand spatial permafrost temperature variability in a High Arctic landscape, Cape Bounty, Nunavut, Canada

Madeleine C. Garibaldi et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant spatial heterogeneity in ground surface and permafrost temperatures in the High Arctic, influenced by topographic features such as snow accumulation and redistribution. Under projected climate change, the coldest permafrost areas are expected to warm by about 9 degrees C, while warmer permafrost areas may warm by 4-7 degrees C, potentially impacting ground stability and hydrological connectivity.

Changes in precipitation and air temperature contribute comparably to permafrost degradation in a warmer climate

Zelalem A. Mekonnen et al.

Summary: The research indicates that increased precipitation in permafrost systems can accelerate the development of the active layer and have an impact on permafrost degradation in the 21st century. ESMs that do not account for precipitation heat transfer may underestimate the rate of change in active layer depth, resulting in biased predictions of ecosystem responses.
