Analysis of soil erosion characteristics in small watershed of the loess tableland Plateau of China

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a major issue in the Wangdonggou watershed on the Loess Plateau. This study investigated the factors influencing soil erosion, such as land use, vegetation coverage, and slope. It found that woodland and grassland, especially with a vegetation coverage of >= 50%, were the main sources of soil erosion. Additionally, increasing vegetation coverage and converting sloping woodland and grassland to terraces were effective strategies for controlling soil erosion.

Assessment of soil erosion under long-term projections of climate change in Poland

Pawel Marcinkowski et al.

Summary: Soil is essential for food production and plays a vital role as a habitat. Preventing soil erosion, particularly caused by water, is crucial. This study fills a research gap in modeling soil loss in Northern and Eastern Europe and assesses the impact of climate change on soil erosion rates in Poland. The results show projected increases in soil erosion rates in the future, highlighting the importance of soil conservation policies.

Retrieval of Suspended Sediment Concentrations in the Pearl River Estuary Using Multi-Source Satellite Imagery

Bowen Cao et al.

Summary: This study developed models to quantify suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) based on in situ spectral data and SSC measurements, and mapped the SSC distribution in the PRE for the period 1986-2020. The results revealed an overall decreasing trend in SSC over the past 35 years, with an abnormal increase observed in shallow waters near Hengmen. The concentration was found to be higher along the west coast compared to the east coast, and a slight increase was observed in the central part of Lingding Bay. The decreased sediment output from the Pearl River Basin was identified as the major cause of the decreasing changes in SSC, while natural factors and human activities could also disturb the spatial distribution of SSC.

Use of a MODIS Satellite-Based Aridity Index to Monitor Drought Conditions in the Pearl River Basin from 2001 to 2021

Kunlong Niu et al.

Summary: Using MODIS satellite data, this study investigated the spatiotemporal changes in drought conditions in the Pearl River Basin, revealing a trend towards wetter conditions in the basin. The research found a significant decrease in drought conditions during the dry season, while no significant trend was observed in the monsoon season. Human activities may be contributing to increased drought conditions in certain areas.

Flood Monitoring in Rural Areas of the Pearl River Basin (China) Using Sentinel-1 SAR

Junliang Qiu et al.

Summary: Flood hazards in the Pearl River Basin in China cause significant casualties and economic losses each year. Monitoring and analyzing flood patterns using satellite images revealed that certain regions in the basin, such as the central West River Basin, are more prone to flooding. Improving flood control policies in rural areas is crucial for ensuring food safety and mitigating the impacts of floods.
