Physical and Biochemical Responses to Sequential Tropical Cyclones in the Arabian Sea

Tongyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physical and biochemical responses in the upper ocean of the Arabian Sea to sequential tropical cyclones. The results showed that the cyclones led to cooling processes, phytoplankton blooms, and the appearance of cold eddies. The redistribution of chlorophyll a was found to be a major mechanism for the first bloom, while the second bloom was fueled by nutrients from the deep layer. The findings were consistent with the observations made by Bio-Argo floats.

Upper ocean response to tropical cyclones: a review

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Tropical cyclones induce various responses in the upper ocean, including near-inertial currents, strong waves, changes in temperature and salinity, and plankton blooms. These responses are controlled by TC-induced mixing, advection, and surface flux, and usually recover within several days to weeks. The characteristics of the upper ocean response depend on TC parameters and environmental factors, and recent advancements in observation methods and numerical models have improved our understanding of these processes.

Twenty-Seven Years of Scatterometer Surface Wind Analysis over Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems

Abderrahim Bentamy et al.

Summary: More than twelve satellite scatterometers have been used since 1992 to provide surface wind vector observations over global oceans. This study combines scatterometer winds with radiometers and synthetic aperture radars (SAR) to improve regional surface wind parameters. The new satellite wind analysis shows significant improvements in accuracy, especially in upwelling areas, compared to previous products.

Phytoplankton Increase Along the Kuroshio Due to the Large Meander

Daniel Andres Lizarbe Barreto et al.

Summary: The study found that during the Kuroshio Large Meander (LM) periods, there were positive anomalies of chlorophyll-a concentration along the Kuroshio path, particularly in the years 2004-2005 and 2017-2019. These anomalies were triggered by meanders generated off the south of Kyushu and slowly propagated to the downstream LM region. Additionally, there were clear relationships between the minimum distance from several coast stations to the Kuroshio axis and the mean chlorophyll-a anomaly, with significant correlations at different stations.
