VIIRS Edition 1 Cloud Properties for CERES, Part 1: Algorithm Adjustments and Results

Patrick Minnis et al.

Summary: Cloud properties are crucial for the CERES Project as they allow accurate interpretation of measured radiances, understanding of global cloud-radiation interactions, and establishment of an important climate record. The CERES techniques for cloud retrievals from MODIS measurements have been adapted for VIIRS measurements to continue the record. There are discrepancies between MODIS and VIIRS cloud properties due to differences in spectral and spatial resolution, calibration inconsistencies, and new reflectance models.

CERES MODIS Cloud Product Retrievals for Edition 4-Part II: Comparisons to CloudSat and CALIPSO

Christopher R. Yost et al.

Summary: Cloud retrievals from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System Edition 4 (Ed4) were compared with CALIOP and CPR retrievals, showing consistent cloud phase detection in 70%-98% of simultaneous observations. MODIS water cloud fraction was generally greater than CALIOP, while ice cloud fraction was lower. Differences in ice cloud base altitude may be influenced by radar detection limitations.

Evaluation of satellite retrievals of liquid clouds from the GOES-13 imager and MODIS over the midlatitude North Atlantic during the NAAMES campaign

David Painemal et al.

Summary: Satellite retrievals of cloud droplet effective radius (r(e)) and optical depth (tau) show biases compared to airborne data, with MODIS displaying better agreement than GOES-13. The positive bias in satellite effective radius, especially for GOES-13, is likely due to complex factors, while the negative bias in satellite optical depth is mainly attributed to highly heterogeneous cloud scenes. Further research is needed to understand the variations in effective radius with viewing geometry angles.
