Investigation of the impact and post-impact behaviour of glass and glass/natural fibre hybrid composites made with various stacking sequences: Experimental and theoretical analysis

Erdem Selver et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact and post-impact response of thermoset composite laminates made from different fabrics were investigated. The results showed that glass composites had higher impact resistance and hybrids with glass fabric layers on the exterior had better impact resistance. Natural and hybrid composites absorbed more energy between 20 and 40 J. Glass composites exhibited higher compression and compression after impact strength, while hybrid composites had higher compression after impact strength retention due to less fiber damages. Numerical analysis showed good agreement with experimental results.

Fabrication of Automobile Component Using Hybrid Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite

Rajkumar Ramasubbu et al.

Summary: In recent years, natural fibers have been increasingly used for their lower weight to strength ratio, low cost, and environmental-friendly attributes. In this study, a hybrid composite (HC) was manufactured using sisal/kenaf fiber reinforced with epoxy matrix, and its mechanical properties were compared with sisal fiber composite (SFC) and kenaf fiber composite (KFC). The results showed that HC exhibited better properties, making it suitable for lightweight automobile applications.

Effect of stacking sequence and fiber content on mechanical and morphological properties of woven kenaf/polyester fiber reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) hybrid laminated composites

M. N. M. Azlin et al.

Summary: Hybrid laminated composites consisting of woven kenaf, woven polyester, and polylactic acid (PLA) were fabricated using the hot compression method. The composition and stacking sequence of the hybrid composites significantly influenced their mechanical properties. Increasing the content of woven kenaf improved the flexural properties of the hybrid composites, while the composition of woven kenaf and woven polyester had an effect on flexural strength. Additionally, the tensile fracture surface morphology was evaluated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), providing insights for industrial applications.

Modification of Ramie Fiber via Impregnation with Low Viscosity Bio-Polyurethane Resins Derived from Lignin

Muhammad Adly Rahandi Lubis et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of ramie fiber through impregnation with low-viscosity lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) resins. The LPU resins were synthesized by dissolving lignin in 20% NaOH and adding polymeric 4,4-methane diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) with a mole ratio of 0.3 NCO/OH. Impregnation of ramie fiber with LPU resins led to the formation of urethane bonds, increasing thermal stability by an average of 6% and mechanical properties by an average of 100% compared to untreated fiber. The best results were obtained with LPU-ethyl acetate, with a residual weight of 22% and tensile strength of 648.7 MPa after 30 minutes of impregnation.

The Effect of Hybridisation on Mechanical Properties and Water Absorption Behaviour of Woven Jute/Ramie Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Cionita Tezara et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties of epoxy composites reinforced by jute-ramie hybridisation, finding that the hybrid composite outperforms pure jute composites. However, exposure to aqueous environments leads to a reduction in mechanical properties, although they remain higher than those of pure epoxy resin. The appropriate stacking sequence and material selection significantly impact mechanical properties and water absorption behavior of the composites.
