Scaffolds for bone-tissue engineering

Seunghun S. Lee et al.

Summary: Due to increased life expectancy, there is a growing demand for efficient orthopedic treatment to address the rising number of orthopedic-related fractures and pathologies. Bone-tissue engineering (BTE) has emerged as an innovative solution using scaffolds to regenerate bone tissue. This article provides an overview of the characteristics of ideal scaffolds and categorizes biomaterials for BTE scaffolds. Recent advances in scaffolds developed over the past 10 years are also reviewed.

Hemin particles-functionalized 3D printed scaffolds for combined photothermal and chemotherapy of osteosarcoma

Wentao Dang et al.

Summary: This study constructed multifunctional scaffolds using 3D printing technology, which showed excellent photothermal response under near-infrared laser irradiation due to the surficial hemin particles. The scaffolds effectively killed osteosarcoma cells in vitro and suppressed tumor growth in vivo through the combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy, indicating high clinical potential for precision medicine in tumor-induced bone defect management.

Bone physiological microenvironment and healing mechanism: Basis for future bone-tissue engineering scaffolds

Guanyin Zhu et al.

Summary: Bone-tissue defects are a global issue, with autologous and allogeneic bone grafting failing to achieve ideal therapeutic effects. This has led researchers to explore novel bone-regeneration methods, with the development of BTE scaffolds at the forefront. By delving into bone physiology and healing mechanisms, biomimicking and bioinspired BTE scaffolds are making progress.

Self-Oscillating 3D Printed Hydrogel Shapes

Ilse B. Nava-Medina et al.

Summary: The combination of self-oscillating chemical reactions with 3D printing techniques allows the construction of 3D geometries with different shapes, sizes, and angles to investigate spatial pattern formation. The study found that size variations in geometries can affect the oscillation frequencies of patterns, playing an important role in spatial alterations.
