Plasticization mitigation strategies for gas and liquid filtration membranes- A review

Ying Shi Chang et al.

Summary: Plasticization is a common problem in polymeric membranes, where specific compounds can cause the material to degrade and lose performance. However, through smart material design and engineering processes, such as crosslinking and blending, this plasticization effect can be minimized. This review critically presents recent approaches to tackle plasticization in glassy polymeric membranes and offers recommendations for future work.

Systematic investigation of methods to suppress membrane plasticization during CO2 permeation at supercritical conditions

Menno Houben et al.

Summary: This study investigates the suppression of CO2-induced plasticization in polyimide membranes under supercritical conditions. Three methods (polymer blending, thermal treatments, and chemical crosslinking) known from low-pressure applications are applied and their effectiveness in suppressing membrane plasticization at high CO2 pressures is identified. Chemical and thermo-oxidative crosslinking provides the highest resistance to plasticization but also lowers permeability, while thermal treatments in N-2 retain high permeability with significant plasticization resistance. Polymer blending increases plasticization resistance but strongly reduces permeability. Crosslinking offers superior plasticization resistance, but tailored strategies are needed to balance this with permeability.

Fine-tuned thermally cross-linkable 6FDA-based polyimide membranes for aggressive natural gas separation

Zhongyun Liu et al.

Summary: Thermally cross-linkable 6FDA-based polyimides containing carboxyl groups were synthesized and cross-linked to dense films via decarboxylation-induced thermal crosslinking. The content of 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid significantly affected the structure evolution during the crosslinking process. These materials provide attractive gas separation performance and plasticization resistance, making them a versatile platform for various aggressive natural gas feeds encountered in practice.

Crosslinked porous polyimides: structure, properties and applications

Basiram Brahma Narzary et al.

Summary: Porous polyimides (pPIs) are a fascinating class of porous organic polymers (POPs) known for their high thermal and chemical stabilities, high surface areas, and energy storage capabilities. Their formation involves simple polycondensation reactions using a variety of linker (dianhydrides) and core (amines) starting materials. These materials have a wide range of applications in gas storage and separation, electrical energy storage, catalysis, drug delivery, and sensors, making them an important area of research for future exploration and development.
