Challenges for photocatalytic overall water splitting

Chuanbiao Bie et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a promising technology for hydrogen production, but its current performance is insufficient for large-scale production. This paper provides a theoretical and practical analysis of the challenges associated with photocatalytic overall water splitting, including unfavorable thermodynamics, slow kinetics, dissolved oxygen, and rapid backward reaction.

Electro-oxidation of tri(ammonium) phosphate: New hydrogen source compatible with Ni-based electro-catalysts

Nasser A. M. Barakat et al.

Summary: The reported Ni-based electro-catalysts are not suitable as anode materials for alcohol-based proton exchange membrane fuel cells due to their high onset potentials. However, these materials can be used for hydrogen generation from alcohols with small biases. In the electro-oxidation of tri(ammonium) phosphate, Ni-decorated graphene is found to be an effective catalyst, and the active layer is not consumed during the reaction.

CdTiO3-NPs incorporated TiO2 nanostructure photocatalyst for scavenger-free water splitting under visible radiation

Nehal A. Erfan et al.

Summary: Nanofibrous morphology and doping technique can enhance the activity of titanium oxide-based photocatalysts by overcoming the issue of electron/hole recombination. The study explores the effect of nanofibrous morphology and cadmium doping on the hydrogen production rate of Cd-doped TiO2 nanostructures. It was found that nanofibers can improve the hydrogen evolution rate by around 10 folds compared to nanoparticles due to electron confinement. Additionally, the formation of type I heterostructures between CdTiO3 nanoparticles and TiO2 matrix contributes to the observed enhancement of photocatalytic activity.

Oxygen-vacancy-induced O2 activation and electron-hole migration enhance photothermal catalytic toluene oxidation

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study improves the photothermal catalytic performance of toluene by introducing oxygen vacancies (Vo) into a Co3O4/TiO2 composite. The Vo activates adsorbed molecular oxygen (O-2) to form reactive oxygen species, promoting deep oxidation of toluene. In addition, Vo captures excited electrons and inhibits the direct recombination of electron-hole pairs, thus promoting the photochemical process.

Facile synthesis of Ni-incorporated and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide as an effective electrode material for tri(ammonium) phosphate electro-oxidation

Nasser A. M. Barakat et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel electrocatalyst based on Ni-incorporated and N-doped reduced graphene oxide was synthesized using a simple one-pot method and used for electrolytic extraction of hydrogen from tri(ammonium) phosphate. The results showed that the prepared composite is an effective electrocatalyst for tri(ammonium) phosphate oxidation when the nickel content is optimized, resulting in good oxidation peaks.

Synergetic effect of metal-doped GO and TiO2 on enhancing visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting

Mohamed S. Atrees et al.

Summary: The study successfully improved the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide under visible light by doping cobalt and nickel in graphene oxide. The optimal ratio of GO:Ni:TiO2 was found to be 10:1:2, while increasing the TiO2 ratio decreased performance in one catalyst but increased it in another. The synergistic effect of Ni/Co and GO supported TiO2 mainly contributed to the remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance under visible light.

Summary: The study demonstrates an efficient method for the coproduction of H-2 and H2O2 through water splitting, using a metal-free photocatalyst DAnTMS/CD composite. This composite can achieve high rates of H-2 and H2O2 production in pure water under visible light, with carbon dots playing a crucial role as active sites in regulating the catalytic property of organic photocatalysts.

RuO2/TiO2 photocatalysts prepared via a hydrothermal route: Influence of the presence of TiO2 on the reactivity of RuO2 in the artificial photosynthesis reaction

Eduardo Morais et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation of nanocomposites by incorporating TiO2 (at two different loadings) with plasmonic RuO2 nanoparticles (with an average size of (3 +/- 0.7) nm). XRD results show the formation of RuO2 in the rutile phase, with high levels of TiO2 forming the rutile phase and lower levels forming the anatase phase. The TiO2 incorporation significantly enhances the reactivity of RuO2 in the artificial photosynthesis reaction under visible light, leading to increased catalyst activities and changed reaction selectivity.
