Characteristic properties of base coat of automobile paint: enhancement in scratch and abrasion resistance by nanoscale reinforcement-a review

Debasmita Mohanty et al.

Summary: This study reviews the properties and components of base coat in the automotive paint industry and explores the use of reinforced nanoparticles as additives to improve scratch and abrasion resistance. It provides insights into different base coat properties, the effects of the environment, and various paint components. Additionally, the study examines paint characteristics, chemical bond formation, changes in chemical structure during processing, and evaluates nanoscale performance. The use of nanoreinforcements such as nanosilica and nanotitanium dioxide is highlighted for enhancing paint performance. The study also offers guidance on selecting automotive paint types based on resins and dispersion medium, and presents methods to enhance scratch and abrasion resistance and overcome color differences in substrates.

Computational modeling of impact failure of polymer coatings

Chenqi Zou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel computational framework to accurately simulate the impact failure behavior of polymer coatings. The proposed method can account for both polymer-ply and interlaminar failure patterns. Numerical results reveal that polymer ply failure includes both brittle and ductile damage. The effects of interfacial properties and coating damage parameters on impact failure of polymer coatings are also investigated.

Understanding of scratch behavior of an automotive coating system: Experiments and finite element analysis

Hanming Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the scratch performance of an automotive coating system using experimental and numerical methods. The study examines the scratch characteristics, effects of scratch speed, loading rate, and stylus type. Through numerical simulations, the observed damage patterns in scratch tests are explained, and the scratch damage process is reasonably surmised. These findings are important for the development of anti-scratch automotive coating structures.

Mass-gravity-scaling technique to enhance computational efficiency of explicit numerical methods for quasi-static problems

E. Y. Kencana et al.

Summary: The study introduces a mass-gravity-scaling (MGS) technique as an extension to the mass-scaling technique, significantly improving the computational efficiency of large soil deformation geotechnical problems. By scaling the material density and model gravity, the initial stress state of the soil can be maintained, resulting in a reduction of computational time.

Contact cracking and delamination of thin solid lubricating films on deformable substrates

Kun Shu et al.

Summary: The study found that substrate plastic deformation affects the cracking and delamination damage of thin solid lubricating films in sliding contacts. A softer substrate leads to parallel cracks in the film, while a harder substrate leads to angular cracks in the film, causing fragmentation and spallation.

Scratch behavior and mechanical properties of alternating multi-layered PMMA/PC materials

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the scratch behavior of multi-layered PMMA/PC materials was investigated through experiments and finite element modeling, revealing interfacial delamination during scratching and dividing the delamination process into three stages dominated by shearing mode crack propagation. Increasing the number of layers resulted in significant enhancement of ductility and toughness in the material.
