Extraction and Characterization of Munja Fibers and Its Potential in the Biocomposites

Manish Kumar Lila et al.

Summary: Increased ecological awareness and strict laws have limited the use of synthetic fibers. Engineers and researchers are now focusing on natural fibers as reinforcement in polymers to develop sustainable composites. This study extracted and characterized 'munja' fibers from Saccharum munja grass, and evaluated their physical, morphological, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. The results show that munja fibers have great potential as reinforcement in biocomposites.

Experimental study of physical, chemical and mechanical properties of enset and sisal fibers

Abera E. Bekele et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of NaOH treatment on the properties of fibers collected from South-West Ethiopia. The results show that 5% and 10% NaOH treatment significantly improves the moisture absorption and diameter of the fibers, as well as the tensile strength of single fibers. Improving fiber properties enhances the mechanical properties of composites.

Effect of pretreated cow dung fiber on mechanical and shrinkage properties of cementitious composites

Kang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, cow dung was processed into cheap renewable cow dung fiber (CDF) and applied in cementitious composites. The alkali pretreatment of CDF enhanced its crystallinity and significantly increased the strength of the composites. The presence of CDF inhibited the autogenous shrinkage of the cementitious paste. This work is expected to promote the recycling of cow dung waste in sustainable building materials.

Mechanical properties of oil palm fibre-reinforced polymer composites: a review

M. R. M. Asyraf et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of natural fibres and biopolymers in many products has gained acceptance due to the serious reduction in petroleum resources and concerns about synthetic plastics. Lignocellulosic fibre polymer biocomposites, particularly those made from oil palm fibres (OPFs), have attracted attention for their wide availability, low carbon emission, and biodegradability. However, the mechanical properties of OPF biocomposites and the factors influencing their performance have not been thoroughly examined.

Mechanical, thermal, viscoelastic and hydrophobicity behavior of complex grape stalk lignin and bamboo fiber reinforced polyester composite

Hassan Alshahrani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation stability of bamboo fiber-reinforced polyester composite toughened with complex lignin biopolymer derived from waste grape stalks. The addition of lignin enhances the mechanical, wear, and thermal properties of the composite. The composite with 2.0 vol% of lignin exhibits the highest tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and ILSS, while the composite with 4 vol% of lignin shows improved wear loss stability.

Lalit Ranakoti et al.

Summary: In this study, waste of tasar silk fiber was used as reinforcement in epoxy resin. After pre-treatment with NaOH coupling agent, treated TSFW-epoxy composites showed lower void fraction and improved mechanical properties compared to untreated ones. The use of treated waste also reduced wear.

Effect of Fiber Shape on the Tribological, Mechanical, and Morphological Behaviors of Sisal Fiber-Reinforced Resin-Based Friction Materials: Helical, Undulated, and Straight Shapes

Siyang Wu et al.

Summary: Different shapes of sisal fibers have a significant influence on the performance of resin-based friction composites, with helical-shaped fibers showing the best tribological and mechanical behaviors. This study demonstrates that adding helical-shaped sisal fibers can enhance the fiber-matrix interface adhesion, reduce fiber debonding, and improve wear resistance, making them a promising candidate for reinforcement in brake friction composite applications.
