Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors of hip fractures in non-institutionalized elderly in the United States. The results showed an increasing trend in hip fractures among the elderly, with higher prevalence in females. Age (especially 80 years and older), race (mainly Non-Hispanic white), smoking, drinking alcohol, living alone, combined with diabetes and osteoporosis were identified as potential risk factors for hip fractures in the elderly.

Reconstruction of soft tissue defects around the Achilles region with distally based extended peroneal artery perforator flap

Summary: This article discusses the use of distally based peroneal artery perforator flap for reconstruction of combined defects of the Achilles tendon and overlying soft tissue in 7 patients. The majority of the flaps (6 out of 7) survived completely with only one case of post-operative venous congestion leading to partial flap necrosis. The advantages of this flap include extended reach for defects, skin texture similarity for convenience with footwear and walking, and creating a protective surface to allow tendon gliding and prevent tissue adhesions.
