Acute Sensitivity of Global Ocean Circulation and Heat Content to Eddy Energy Dissipation Timescale

J. Mak et al.

Summary: The global ocean overturning circulation is crucial for climate evolution and is sensitive to the mesoscale eddy energy dissipation timescale. This study highlights the importance of constraining uncertainties associated with eddy energy dissipation for climate model projections over centennial timescales and paleoclimate simulations over millennial timescales.

Sensitivity of a Coarse-Resolution Global Ocean Model to a Spatially Variable Neutral Diffusivity

R. M. Holmes et al.

Summary: Motivated by recent advances in mapping mesoscale eddy tracer mixing in the ocean, this study evaluated the sensitivity of a coarse-resolution global ocean model to spatially variable neutral diffusion coefficients. Results show that suppression of mixing by mean flows is the most important factor, while the vertical structure is relatively unimportant. Utilizing the full theory strengthened the interhemispheric overturning cell, reduced zonal mean tracer biases, and impacted circulation through temperature-induced changes and nonlinear equation effects.

The Impact of Topography and Eddy Parameterization on the Simulated Southern Ocean Circulation Response to Changes in Surface Wind Stress

Hailu Kong et al.

Summary: The response of the Southern Ocean circulation to changes in surface wind stress remains uncertain, highlighting the importance of considering topography and parameterized eddies in coarse-resolution simulations. Topography plays a crucial role in modulating the response of the Southern Ocean circulation to changes in surface wind stress, emphasizing the need for further research on the interaction between mesoscale eddies and stationary meanders induced by topography.

An Idealized Model Study of Eddy Energetics in the Western Boundary Graveyard

Zhibin Yang et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that the western boundary acts as a graveyard for westward-propagating ocean eddies, where the dissipation of eddy energy remains unclear. Using an idealized MIT ocean circulation model, it was found that significant eddy energy dissipation occurs at the western boundary, with the topography affecting the dissipation process.

Does Topographic Form Stress Impede Prograde Ocean Currents?

Yue Bai et al.

Summary: Topographic form stress (TFS) plays a crucial role in controlling the movement of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) and is particularly related to the formation of Rossby waves. Retrograde flow systems are significantly impeded by TFS, while prograde flow systems are impacted by a combination of TFS and bottom friction. Bottom friction shifts the phase of standing wave pressure fields, contributing to the generation of TFS in both prograde and retrograde flows. The asymmetry in momentum balances between prograde and retrograde systems suggests that prograde currents may be more sensitive to changes in wind forcing, especially related to climate shifts.
