Yielding hydroxyl radicals in the Fenton-like reaction induced by manganese (II) oxidation determines Cd mobilization upon soil aeration in paddy soil systems

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the redox reaction of manganese plays a significant role in the mobilization of cadmium during the aeration of paddy soils. Extractable cadmium concentration decreases rapidly during reduction phases but increases upon oxidation, while the availability of Cd is influenced by soil pe + pH and extractable Mn concentration. Inhibiting the oxidation of Mn(II)-containing phases by microbes suppresses the production of hydroxyl free radicals (center dot OH) and Cd mobilization during drainage phase.

Mining subsidence area reconstruction with N2-fixing plants promotes arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal biodiversity and microbial biomass C:N:P stoichiometry of cyanobacterial biocrusts

Yinli Bi et al.

Summary: Vegetation restoration can enhance the development of cyanobacterial biocrusts and the diversity of AMF communities, with N2-fixing plant species playing a key role in this process. Vegetation cover is a major determinant of biocrust biomass and influences AMF diversity and microbial biomass C:P ratio.

AMF species improve yielding potential of Cd stressed pigeonpea plants by modulating sucrose-starch metabolism, nutrients acquisition and soil microbial enzymatic activities

Aditi Bisht et al.

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy of four arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species in imparting cadmium stress tolerance to pigeonpea plants. The results showed that mycorrhizal supplementations enhanced growth and yield by reducing cadmium uptake and improving carbohydrate synthesis of stressed plants. Rhizoglomus intraradices showed the highest efficacy in alleviating cadmium stress.

Differential Mechanisms Drive Species Loss Under Artificial Shade and Fertilization in the Alpine Meadow of the Tibetan Plateau

Junyong Li et al.

Summary: Experiments manipulating light availability and soil nutrients simultaneously are rare. The results showed that artificial shade decreased community biomass accumulation whereas fertilization increased it. Extinction of non-Gramineae species was the main reason for species diversity decline. Light availability is consistently important for plant growth, with LCP being a vital driver in determining species coexistence.

The combined effect of Diversispora versiformis and sodium bentonite contributes on the colonization of Phragmites in cadmium-contaminated soil

Shuang-Qiang Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a potting experiment to promote the colonization of Phragmites in Cd polluted, nutrient deprived, and structurally damaged soil using chemical and microbial modifiers. The co-application of Diversispora versiformis and sodium bentonite significantly improved the soil structure and phosphorus utilization of the plant, while reducing the content of cadmium bound by diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid. The results showed increased Phragmites height, tillers, and photosynthetic capacity, along with increased abundance of phosphorus-releasing microbial communities and regulation of phosphorus fixation by the plant.

Enhancing phytoremediation of soils polluted with heavy metals

Maria Gavrilescu

Summary: Environmental pollution with heavy metals adversely affects soil quality and crop yields. Phytoremediation, using plants as hyperaccumulators, provides an environmentally friendly solution, but it is not without its drawbacks. Plant toxicity and low bioavailability of heavy metals in soil are major challenges. Various techniques have been proposed to enhance and expedite phytoremediation by increasing plant tolerance to heavy metal toxicity and promoting heavy metal extraction and transport.

Effect of Alteration in Precipitation Amount on Soil Microbial Community in a Semi-Arid Grassland

Junyong Li et al.

Summary: In semi-arid grasslands, changes in precipitation have a greater impact on bacterial communities than fungal communities, and bacterial communities are more sensitive to a decrease in precipitation. A long-term field manipulation experiment in northern China showed that bacterial species richness significantly decreased with decreased precipitation but remained stable with increased precipitation. The relative abundance of oligotrophic, slow-growing bacterial phyla increased with decreased precipitation but decreased with increased precipitation, while the relative abundance of copiotrophic, fast-growing bacterial phyla decreased with decreased precipitation but increased with increased precipitation. In contrast, diversity, species composition, and relative abundance of different fungal phyla showed little change with precipitation changes.

Physiological response of Arizona cypress to Cd-contaminated soil inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria

Hamed Aalipour et al.

Summary: Increasing industrial activities have led to soil contamination with toxic metals, but beneficial soil microorganisms like Pseudomonas fluorescens and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can help reduce the toxic effects of heavy metals. This study found that co-inoculation with AMF and P. fluorescens or individual inoculation with AMF could potentially mitigate the harmful effects of cadmium on Arizona cypress growth, increasing photosynthetic pigments and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities. Additionally, AMF treatments increased glomalin related soil proteins concentration, showing potential for environmental remediation.

Huiqin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis of sludge into leachate sludge-derived biochar (LSDB) and found that the microstructural changes were primarily due to decomposition of various compounds. Heavy metals in LSDB were present as surface precipitates rather than surface complexation, leading to low leaching contents below discharge standards.

Summary: This study demonstrated the beneficial effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on plants under nickel stress, including promoting plant growth, improving water content, and increasing photosynthetic pigment content. By regulating the expression of aquaporin genes, the mycorrhizal fungi may reduce nickel accumulation and translocation in plants through an avoidance strategy.

Differences in the effects of single and mixed species of AMF on the growth and oxidative stress defense in Lolium perenne exposed to hydrocarbons

Monika Malicka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of single and mixed-species AMF inocula from a contaminated environment on the growth, oxidative stress, and antioxidative enzyme activity in Lolium perenne on a substrate contaminated with phenol/PAHs. Single AMF species significantly enhanced plant growth while mixed-species AMF inocula showed varying levels of oxidative stress and antioxidative enzyme activity. Among the studied AMF species, F. caledonium exhibited the highest tolerance to contaminants and promoted plant growth effectively.
