Physical activity and perceived environment among adults from a city in Southern Brazilian

Luciana Zaranza Monteiro et al.

Summary: This article aimed to explore the relationship between physical activity and perceived environment among adults in a city in southern Brazil. The study found that neighborhoods with public spaces for physical exercise and dog walking were associated with a higher prevalence of following moderate-to-vigorous physical activity guidelines. The presence of invitations from friends and/or relatives for physical activity, participation in sports events, and the habit of dog walking were associated with leisure-time walking. Access to places for purchasing fresh fruits/vegetables, light/diet foods, well-maintained sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and sports events in the neighborhood were associated with a higher prevalence of active transportation. On the other hand, the presence of snack or fast food establishments in the neighborhood was associated with a lower prevalence of active transportation. The perception of environmental variables was found to be associated with physical activity, walking, and active transportation.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the prevalence/incidence of sedentary behavior and physical inactivity, their association with obesity, and the measures used to estimate them in adults and older adults with obesity. The study found high rates of sedentary behavior and physical inactivity in individuals with obesity, and a positive risk association with obesity. The use of objective and subjective measures resulted in variations in estimates.

Summary: The study revealed that sociodemographic inequities are associated differently with active transportation across Latin American countries. For example, men and those with higher socioeconomic status are more likely to engage in walking, while the use of private transport is associated with reduced time spent in walking and cycling.

Mix of destinations and sedentary behavior among Brazilian adults: a cross-sectional study

Alex Antonio Florindo et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the relationship between sitting time and access to a mix of destinations for adults in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The results show that a greater mix of destinations within 500m of residences was associated with shorter sitting times on both weekdays and weekend days. This suggests that built environments more favorable for walking in cities like Sao Paulo may help reduce sedentary behavior and prevent chronic diseases.

Mediation role of residential density on the association between perceived environmental factors and active commuting to school in Brazilian adolescents

Arieli Fernandes Dias et al.

Summary: The study found that residential density is a mediator in the relationship between perceived environmental factors and active commuting to school, while street connectivity is not associated with active commuting. This suggests that improving the relationship between adolescent commuting patterns and environmental factors should focus on residential density.

Perceptions of the Neighborhood Built Environment for Walking Behavior in Older Adults Living in Close Proximity

Florian Herbolsheimer et al.

Summary: Previous research has shown a discrepancy between perceived and objectively assessed neighborhood environmental features on walking behavior. This study found that older adults who walked for transport in their neighborhood perceived the same neighborhood as more walkable with better pedestrian infrastructure. However, older adults with physical limitations perceived the same neighborhood as less safe from crime and traffic.
