The roots of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy: evidence from Hungary

Andras Biro-Nagy et al.

Summary: This research examines the factors influencing vaccine hesitancy during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hungary. The study finds that government supporters, older individuals (aged 60+), and COVID-19 survivors are more likely to accept vaccination, but these factors become insignificant when personal fears and pandemic-related attitudes are taken into account. COVID-19 fears and precautionary behavior decrease, while general levels of fears increase the likelihood of vaccine hesitancy. Fear of partner's aggression and higher levels of financial security are negatively associated with vaccine hesitancy. The study also highlights the significant positive impact of various pandemic-related conspiratorial beliefs on vaccine hesitancy, with vaccine-related conspiracy theories (microchip and population control theories) and virus denial being the strongest predictors.

Clinical severity of, and effectiveness of mRNA vaccines against, covid-19 from omicron, delta, and alpha SARS-CoV-2 variants in the United States: prospective observational study

Adam S. Lauring et al.

Summary: mRNA vaccines were highly effective in preventing covid-19 associated hospital admissions related to the alpha, delta, and omicron variants. Three vaccine doses were required for protection against omicron, while two doses provided protection against delta and alpha variants. Omicron variant showed lower disease severity compared to delta variant but still resulted in morbidity and mortality. Vaccinated patients had lower disease severity than unvaccinated patients for all the variants.

Predictors of Vaccine Acceptance, Confidence, and Hesitancy in General, and COVID-19 Vaccination Refusal in the Province of Quebec, Canada

Alexis Nizigiyimana et al.

Summary: This study examined the factors associated with vaccine acceptance, confidence, hesitancy, and refusal in the general population of Quebec, Canada. The majority of participants showed positive attitudes towards vaccination. Socio-demographic and health-related quality of life factors were found to be associated with the outcome variables, emphasizing the importance of considering these factors in interventions to improve COVID-19 vaccination rates.

Understanding hesitancy with revealed preferences across COVID-19 vaccine types

Kristof Kutasi et al.

Summary: Many countries have more COVID-19 vaccines than their population wants to take, leading to a better understanding of vaccine hesitancy. However, the existing literature has neglected the heterogeneity of hesitancy by vaccine types. This study examines the acceptance and evaluation of five vaccine types, finding that hesitancy varies depending on individuals' trusted source of information. Believers of conspiracy theories are more likely to reject mRNA vaccines, while those who follow politicians' advice are more accepting of vector-based or whole-virus vaccines. The study argues that offering a greater selection of vaccines and individual choice can help increase vaccination rates in societies.

Evaluation of Immunogenicity and Safety of Vero Cell-Derived Inactivated COVID-19 Vaccine in Older Patients with Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus

Yuntao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of the COVID-19 vaccine in individuals aged >= 60 years with hypertension or(/and) diabetes. The vaccine showed good immunogenicity with a seroconversion rate of 100% and non-inferior post-vaccination geometric mean titers compared to the healthy population. The rates of vaccine-related adverse reactions were low and no serious adverse events were reported. The vaccine was well-tolerated and effective in this population.

Global Predictors of COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy: A Systematic Review

Carla Pires

Summary: This systematic review identified and analyzed predictors of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and/or hesitancy. The results showed that factors such as lower perceived risk of infection, lower level of institutional trust, non-vaccination against influenza, lower levels of perceived severity of COVID-19, and stronger beliefs about vaccine side effects or safety concerns were predominant predictors of vaccine hesitancy.

Influence of a COVID-19 vaccine's effectiveness and safety profile on vaccination acceptance

Robert M. Kaplan et al.

Summary: The study found that vaccine efficacy is the key factor influencing people's acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines, while relatively minor side effects do not significantly affect willingness to vaccinate. The probability of serious adverse reactions does have an effect, albeit small. Following the announcement of vaccine efficacy being 95%, there was a slight increase in willingness to vaccinate.

COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in a representative working-age population in France: a survey experiment based on vaccine characteristics

Michael Schwarzinger et al.

Summary: This study highlights that COVID-19 vaccine acceptance is influenced by the characteristics of new vaccines and national vaccination strategies, as well as factors such as gender, age, education level, and past vaccination history. In the working-age population in France, the outright vaccine refusal rate is approximately 29.4%, while vaccine hesitancy is influenced by vaccine characteristics and information on herd immunity benefits.

Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia after ChAdOx1 nCov-19 Vaccination

Andreas Greinacher et al.

Summary: After vaccination with ChAdOx1 nCov-19, rare immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia can occur due to platelet-activating antibodies against PF4, resulting in various thrombotic events. Most patients in this case series were women, with fatal outcomes such as cerebral venous thrombosis and intracranial hemorrhage. Additional studies are needed to further investigate and understand this phenomenon.
