Enhancing the decomposition of extracellular polymeric substances and the recovery of short-chain fatty acids from waste activated sludge: Analysis of the performance and mechanism of co-treatment by free nitrous acid and calcium peroxide

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined treatment of free nitrous acid (FNA) and calcium peroxide (CaO2) on waste activated sludge enhances the decomposition of EPS and the release of organic compounds during pretreatment, leading to a significant increase in the accumulation of SCFAs.

Simultaneous recovery of vivianite and produce short-chain fatty acids from waste activated sludge using potassium ferrate as pre-oxidation treatment

Qinxue Wen et al.

Summary: This study discussed the strategy of pre-oxidation of waste activated sludge with potassium ferrate to enhance resource recovery and environmentally friendly disposal. The results showed that pre-oxidation significantly shortened the fermentation time and formed the main Fe-P mineral. The optimal pre-oxidation conditions achieved the maximum production of short-chain fatty acids and recovery rate of vivianite. Mechanism analysis revealed that pre-oxidation facilitated the disintegration and acidification of waste activated sludge, promoting the formation of vivianite. This study is important for the resource recovery and environmentally friendly disposal of waste activated sludge.

Study on community structure and metabolic mechanism of dominant polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) in suspended biofilm based on phosphate recovery

Min Ni et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficiency of phosphorus (P) removal and enrichment in municipal wastewater by Biofilm Sequencing Batch Reactor (BSBR) was assessed. The role of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) in P removal and the metabolic characteristics of dominant PAOs and GAOs at different influent P concentrations were studied. The findings revealed that BSBR provided sufficient reducing power and ATP for PAOs through different glycogen decomposition pathways, allowing for efficient P removal and enrichment.

Novel CaO2 beads used in the anaerobic fermentation of iron-rich sludge for simultaneous short-chain fatty acids and phosphorus recovery under ambient conditions

Qian Ping et al.

Summary: The use of novel composite CaO2 beads can enhance the production of total short-chain fatty acids (TSCFAs) and phosphorus (P) recovery from iron-rich waste activated sludge during ambient anaerobic fermentation. The CaO2 beads with porous structure and sustained release of CaO2 effectively enriched dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) and promoted iron-reduction related genes, leading to a high TSCFAs production and P recovery rate. The P-rich beads are easily separated from sludge for further P recovery, while the supernatant containing acetate and Fe2+ can be returned to wastewater treatment line for nutrient removal.
