Active MMP-8 point-of-care (PoC)/chairside enzyme-test as an adjunctive tool for early and real-time diagnosis of peri-implantitis

Hanna Lahteenmaki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the utility of the aMMP-8-PoC test as a quantitative real-time chair-side diagnostic tool for peri-implant diagnosis. The results showed that the aMMP-8-PoC test can promptly and accurately diagnose peri-implant disease. Compared to other biomarkers, aMMP-8/ORALyzer analysis was more precise.

Matrix Metalloproteinase Inspired Therapeutic Strategies for Bone Diseases

Longfa Kou et al.

Summary: Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are zinc-containing enzymes that are involved in breaking down the Extracellular Matrix (ECM) and play crucial roles in cell migration, aging, and other physiological processes. Research on the functions and mechanisms of MMPs in bone health and diseases has gained increasing attention, providing new insights into the treatment of bone-related diseases.

Summary: Calculating sample size in scientific studies is crucial for scientific contribution, impacting hypothesis and study design. Incorrect sample size may lead to inadequate results, time and cost losses, and ethical issues. This review aims to highlight the importance of sample size and provide researchers with tools to estimate it accurately.

Enzymatic Methods for Salivary Biomarkers Detection: Overview and Current Challenges

Alonso Ornelas-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Saliva has emerged as a non-invasive and valuable source of biomarker information, containing many of the biomarkers found in blood. While there are opportunities for improvement in terms of cost and complexity, enzymatic assays offer a cost-effective alternative for biomarker quantification in saliva samples. Critical analysis of technical elements for large-scale clinical applications of enzymatic methods is essential for overcoming current limitations.

Assessing saliva microbiome collection and processing methods

Abigail J. S. Armstrong et al.

Summary: The oral microbiome is connected with lung health and may play a role in the progression of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Saliva-based tests for SARS-CoV-2 can be used to assess the oral microbiome, but collection kits have not been tested for accuracy. Collecting saliva with a preservative and depleting human DNA before sequencing can lead to more consistent measures of the oral microbiome and increased abundance of bacterial sequences. Additionally, the study found that the distance of microbiome composition was smaller within subjects over time compared to between unrelated subjects.

Validation and verification of predictive salivary biomarkers for oral health

Nagihan Bostanci et al.

Summary: The study found that combining multiple biomarker assays provides higher predictive accuracy for gingivitis and periodontitis compared to using single biomarkers, with over 90% accuracy for distinguishing between gingivitis and healthy groups, and 100% accuracy for distinguishing between periodontitis and healthy or gingivitis groups. Additionally, the ratios of biomarkers MMP-8, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 were found to be powerful differentiating values compared to single biomarkers.

Human Saliva as a Diagnostic Specimen for Early Detection of Inflammatory Biomarkers by Real-Time RT-PCR

Nourin Shakeeb et al.

Summary: Saliva is increasingly studied as a non-invasive and stress-free diagnostic material, with RNA extracted from saliva being used for early disease detection through real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Assessing the host inflammatory response and its resolution at early stages can serve as a prognostic and predictive method for determining therapeutic response or disease progression. The potential of saliva as a specimen for diagnosing early inflammatory biomarkers using RT-PCR is fascinating and useful.
