Bidirectional Introgression between Mus musculus domesticus and Mus spretus

Sarah E. Banker et al.

Summary: Introgressed variants from other species can be a significant source of genetic variation due to their rapid emergence, potential for multiple mutations on a single haplotype, and previous selection in the species of origin. This study identifies introgression in one wild population of M. spretus and three wild populations of M. m. domesticus, despite significant reproductive isolation between these species. The introgressed regions were found on all autosomes for both species, with longer tracts observed in olfactory receptor regions. This suggests that introgression may contribute to functional novelty even in species with high barriers to gene flow.

Population structure and inbreeding in wild house mice (Mus musculus) at different geographic scales

Andrew P. Morgan et al.

Summary: House mice, as animals with a commensal relationship with humans, have spread globally and are important model organisms in biomedical research. An analysis of ancestry, population structure, and inbreeding in wild mice revealed that major ancestry components in North America, Australia, etc. are of northern European origin, and inbreeding is prevalent in commensal populations.
