Investigating intra-aggregate microstructure characteristics and influencing factors of six soil types along a climatic gradient

Jue Peng et al.

Summary: The pore structure is crucial for soil aggregation and various processes within aggregates. This study examined the intra-aggregate microstructure of six weathered soils under different climates. Results showed significant differences in the microstructure among soil types, with differences in porosity, pore size distribution, and pore shape. Soil organic carbon and aluminum oxides were found to have a positive effect on the microstructure, while iron oxides had a negative effect.

Biodiversity responses to restoration across the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Joao Paulo Romanelli et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (BAF), one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world, to investigate the response of biodiversity features to forest restoration. The results revealed that there is an incomplete recovery of biodiversity, referred to as the "recovery gap", during the restoration process in the BAF. The recovery gap for structure features was found to be 34% and for diversity features was 22% compared to reference forests. The study also found that the recovery gap varied among different taxonomic groups and was influenced by restoration actions and past land-use.

Global soil profiles indicate depth-dependent soil carbon losses under a warmer climate

Mingming Wang et al.

Summary: This study combines space-for-time substitution with meta-analysis to estimate the effect of future climate warming on steady-state soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. The results show that SOC stock will reduce under warming, with larger proportional losses in topsoil and in boreal forests. The existing SOC level is the main determinant of spatial variability in SOC changes.

Impact of tree litter identity, litter diversity and habitat quality on litter decomposition rates in tropical moist evergreen forest

Seyoum Getaneh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the importance of tree species choice on litter decomposition and nutrient recycling for the restoration of degraded land. The results show significant effects of both litter quality and diversity on decomposition rates, with native tree species exhibiting faster decomposition. Additionally, positive non-additive effects were observed for litter mixtures containing nutrient-rich litter.

A state-of-the-art review of polymers used in soil stabilization

Jianxin Huang et al.

Summary: This paper provides a review of research on using polymers for soil stabilization in pavement and geotechnical engineering. It discusses the properties and mechanisms of various polymer classes, such as geopolymers, biopolymers, and synthetic organic polymers, impacting soil stabilization. The challenges for wider use of polymer stabilization, including limited evaluation standards, life-cycle cost considerations, and moisture susceptibility, are highlighted, along with recommendations for future research directions.

Differences in temperature sensitivity and drought recovery between natural stands and plantations of conifers are species-specific

J. Julio Camarero et al.

Summary: The study found differences in the response to climate change between plantations and natural stands in different tree species. Natural stands of Abies pinsapo, Cedrus atlantica, and Pinus sylvestris showed faster recovery than plantations, while Pinus pinea plantations recovered quicker than natural stands.

Effects of plant species on soil quality in natural and planted areas of a forest park in northern Iran

Misagh Parhizkar et al.

Summary: The study found that soils with natural trees exhibit higher root weight density, pH, and organic carbon compared to reforested sites. These differences lead to higher nutrient contents, microbial respiration, aggregate stability, and water retention in soils with natural trees. Therefore, planted species may result in an overall lower quality of soils compared to natural forest.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and goethite promote carbon sequestration via hyphal-aggregate mineral interactions

Peduruhewa H. Jeewani et al.

Summary: Our study found that the co-amendment of AMF and goethite can reduce CO2 emissions from rhizodeposits and promote their allocation into macro-aggregates, while AMF inoculation accelerates soil organic carbon turnover and rhizodeposit stabilization. These results highlight the potential of both goethite and AMF to contribute to carbon accrual in a soil-plant system.

Long-term manure application enhances the stability of aggregates and aggregate-associated carbon by regulating soil physicochemical characteristics

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of different fertilization practices on soil aggregate stability and aggregate-associated carbon in alkaline soil. Results show that manure application improves soil physicochemical properties and enhances the stability of aggregates and aggregate-associated carbon, while high pH restricts their stability. Strategies to improve alkaline soil and increase soil carbon stocks may prioritize manure or fertilizer application to reduce soil acidity.

Long-term vegetation restoration promotes the stability of the soil micro-food web in the Loess Plateau in North-west China

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that vegetation restoration promoted the input of the availability of external resources, enhanced the metabolic activity of omnivorous carnivores and the soil carbon flow, and stabilized the soil food web. However, the increase in vegetation restoration time not only changed the species composition but also changed the carbon input, due to the lack of interference by agriculture. Therefore, the intrinsic mechanism needs to be studied further.
