Bamboo-based composites: A review on fundamentals and processes of bamboo bonding

William Nguegang Nkeuwa et al.

Summary: This paper provides a critical review of bamboo composite bonding, highlighting the challenges in bonding bamboo with wood adhesives. It emphasizes the importance of optimizing bamboo element preparation, treatment, and adhesive modification for more efficient material utilization and processes. The paper also discusses the need for developing bond qualification standards tailored to stronger bamboo tissues, as well as the potential use of isocyanate-based resins for bamboo strand composites.

Effect of Preservative Treatment on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Bamboo (Gigantochloa scortechinii) Strips

Norhazaedawati Baharuddin et al.

Summary: The treatability of Gigantochloa scortechinii with boron and copper chrome boron preservatives was investigated. The study found that both preservatives showed a high level of penetration and resulted in weight percent gain and extent of retention. Treatment also reduced swelling and shrinkage in bamboo, with a significant difference between radial and tangential dimensions. Treated bamboo showed differences in mechanical properties compared to untreated bamboo.

Bond Quality and Durability of Cross-Laminated Flattened Bamboo and Timber (CLBT)

Shiyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using flattened bamboo and Chinese fir for manufacturing cross-laminated bamboo and timber (CLBT) and examined the bond quality and durability of CLBT panels. The results showed that the adhesive type had a significant impact on the bond quality and delamination, while the bonding pressure had no significant effect. CLBT specimens prepared from PUR adhesives had higher bonding shear strength and wood failure percentage, but the durability of delamination specimens was not as good as layered specimens prepared by PRF.
