Sensitivity to water stress drives differential decline and mortality dynamics of three co-occurring conifers with different drought tolerance

Summary: This study compared three coniferous tree species in a xeric Mediterranean ecotone and found that the more drought-sensitive Pinus pinaster showed widespread decline and high mortality, while the more drought-tolerant Pinus pinea and Juniperus oxycedrus remained unaffected. The decline in growth of Pinus pinaster started after extreme droughts, lasting longer in declining trees compared to non-declining trees. Factors related to moisture availability increased survival probability in Pinus pinaster but not in Pinus pinea. Overall, drought-induced mortality was related to species-specific sensitivity to water stress and may lead to compositional changes in the forest towards dominance of more drought-tolerant species.
