Longitudinal strain is an independent predictor of survival and response to therapy in patients with systemic AL amyloidosis

Oliver C. Cohen et al.

Summary: Cardiac involvement is a critical factor affecting the prognosis of patients with AL amyloidosis. The decrease of longitudinal strain is associated with worse prognosis. The improvement of longitudinal strain is associated with extended survival.

Echocardiographic assessment of cardiac amyloidosis

Tanushree Agrawal et al.

Summary: Cardiac amyloidosis, a type of infiltrative cardiomyopathy, is associated with poor prognosis in untreated patients, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and timely initiation of effective therapies. Echocardiography serves as the first-line imaging modality for evaluating heart failure and suspected cardiac amyloidosis, providing crucial information for the challenging diagnosis.

Time trajectory of cardiac function and its relation with survival in patients with light-chain cardiac amyloidosis

In-Chang Hwang et al.

Summary: In patients with AL cardiac amyloidosis undergoing active chemotherapy, deterioration of left ventricle function may begin as early as 3-6 months after the first chemotherapy. Factors such as B-natriuretic peptide >500 pg/mL, E/e' >15, and LV-GLS <10% were identified as independent predictors of outcome.

Determinants of left atrial reservoir and pump strain and use of atrial strain for evaluation of left ventricular filling pressure

Katsuji Inoue et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate determinants of left atrial (LA) reservoir and pump strain and their ability to serve as markers of left ventricular (LV) filling pressure. The strongest determinants of LA strains were found to be LV global longitudinal strain (GLS) and LV filling pressure. Accuracy of LA strains in identifying elevated LV filling pressure was highest in patients with reduced LV systolic function, while high values of LA pump strain accurately identified normal LV filling pressure in patients with normal systolic function.

Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis: a position statement of the ESC Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases

Pablo Garcia-Pavia et al.

Summary: Cardiac amyloidosis is a serious infiltrative disease caused by the deposition of amyloid fibrils in the heart, which can be due to genetic variants or acquired conditions. With advances in imaging techniques, non-invasive diagnosis is now possible, showing that cardiac amyloidosis is more common than previously thought. The Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Disease has proposed definitions and diagnostic algorithms for cardiac amyloidosis.

Diagnosis and treatment of cardiac amyloidosis: a position statement of the ESC Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases

Pablo Garcia-Pavia et al.

Summary: Cardiac amyloidosis is a serious and progressive infiltrative disease caused by amyloid fibril deposition in the heart. Advances in imaging techniques and diagnostic algorithms have made it possible to diagnose the condition non-invasively. Monitoring and treating cardiac amyloidosis are important in bridging the gap between research advances and clinical practice.
