Influence of environmental variables on macroinvertebrate community structure in Lianhuan Lake

Qianming Dou et al.

Summary: The structural characteristics of macroinvertebrate communities can indicate the health status of lake ecosystems. This study investigated the community composition and environmental relationships of macroinvertebrates in small lakes within Lianhuan Lake, China. The results showed that environmental factors significantly influenced the classification of macroinvertebrate communities, and human disturbances and eutrophication negatively impacted their structure. Therefore, improving the ecological environment and controlling environmental pollution are essential for enhancing the macroinvertebrate community structure.

Land use effects on water quality, habitat, and macroinvertebrate and diatom communities in African highland streams

Tatenda Dalu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the composition of diatom and macroinvertebrate communities in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe and found that the land use significantly affected both water quality and biotic components. These findings provide important scientific reference for the protection of freshwater resources in African Highland streams.

Linking Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity to Ecosystem Function Across Scales, Trophic Levels, and Realms

Kyla M. Dahlin et al.

Summary: Global declines in biodiversity can impact ecosystem function, and more research is needed to explore the biodiversity-ecosystem function connections across different ecological realms. Various linkages include cross-system subsidies, ecosystem engineering, and hydrology.

The seasonality of macroinvertebrate β diversity along the gradient of hydrological connectivity in a dynamic river-floodplain system

Rui Dong et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic disturbances to natural hydrological connectivity pose a threat to freshwater ecosystem integrity. Studies have shown that hydrological connectivity affects spatial variations in flora and fauna communities, but understanding temporal changes and processes is also crucial. In a study of macroinvertebrates in a floodplain wetland, it was found that water level fluctuations influenced beta diversity and LHC affected species richness and abundance across different hydrological phases.

Diversity-production relationships of fish communities in freshwater stream ecosystems

Bonnie J. E. Myers et al.

Summary: The relationship between species richness and biomass production in freshwater fish communities across the Appalachian Mountain range was explored. Species richness had a significant positive effect on fish community production, while Shannon diversity index did not show a significant impact. Biodiversity was found to play a crucial role in influencing fish production, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity in fisheries management.

Linking pollution to biodiversity and ecosystem multifunctionality across benthic-pelagic habitats of a large eutrophic lake: A whole-ecosystem perspective

Weizhen Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that biodiversity loss may lead to weakened ecosystem functioning in freshwater ecosystems, with environmental stressors such as eutrophication and heavy metals influencing the relationships between biodiversity and EMF. Sediment heavy metals and total phosphorus significantly explained spatial variations in EMF, with heavy metals potentially more important than phosphorus.

Dominance determines fish community biomass in a temperate seagrass ecosystem

Aaron M. Eger et al.

Summary: This study looked at the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function in 14 subtidal eelgrass meadows, finding that fish community biomass is maximized when taxonomic richness and functional evenness are low, and in communities dominated by species with particular trait values. The results suggest that locally dominant species play a key role in ecosystem function and can drive it in moderately diverse communities.
