Comparison of silhouette-based reallocation methods for vegetation classification

Attila Lengyel et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new iterative clustering method REMOS based on silhouette width and compares its performance with the existing algorithm OPTSIL. REMOS algorithms showed faster runtime and lower misclassification rate compared to OPTSIL, making them preferable in certain scenarios where reducing negative silhouette widths and time efficiency are important factors.

Let your maps be fuzzy!-Class probabilities and floristic gradients as alternatives to crisp mapping for remote sensing of vegetation

Hannes Feilhauer et al.

Summary: Mapping vegetation with hard classification based on remote sensing data may not accurately reflect the fuzzy nature of plant species transitions in ecotones. Fuzzy classification and gradient mapping offer better alternatives by considering the probability of class membership and describing plant species composition as a continuum, respectively. Both approaches support spatially explicit accuracy analyses and are recommended over hard classification for ecological research applications.

Rephotography, permanent plots and remote sensing data provide varying insights on vegetation change on subantarctic Macquarie Island, 1980-2015

Nicholas B. Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: Despite its remoteness, Macquarie Island's vegetation has been extensively surveyed and monitored, documenting the impacts of introduced rabbits and climate change. Repeat landscape photography provided insights into previously unreported trends, while the plot data, although not fully consistent with the photography, were costly to collect. Remote sensing data were effective in monitoring certain aspects of vegetation change but were unable to detect other changes.

Species differ in their responses to wind: the underexplored link between species fine-scale occurrences and variation in wind stress

Mia Momberg et al.

Summary: The study shows that wind stress significantly improves species distribution models in a chronically windy area like Marion Island. Wind was found to be a significant predictor for the occurrence of many species, especially those characteristic of open, wet environments and pteridophyte species. Incorporating wind metrics into species distribution models can provide valuable insights, particularly as wind patterns change.

On the Interpretations of Joint Modeling in Community Ecology

Giovanni Poggiato et al.

Summary: This article explores the mathematical links between species distribution models (SDMs) and joint species distribution models (JSDMs), emphasizing that both models are unable to separate environmental effects from biotic interactions. The authors provide a guide to help determine when JSDMs are preferable to SDMs for species community modeling. Ultimately, the article calls for a better understanding and adoption of novel statistical developments in biodiversity modeling.

A comparative study of hard clustering algorithms for vegetation data

Naghmeh Pakgohar et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of different clustering algorithms using various cluster validity evaluators, revealing that OPTSIL and Ward's method performed well in certain situations. K-means with Hellinger distance outperformed Partitioning Around Medoids (PAM) algorithms. Bray-Curtis dissimilarity combined with a range of clustering algorithms was successful in most cases.
