Assessing Local and Branch-specific Activity in Dendrites

Jason J. Moore et al.

Summary: Dendrites are neural processes that integrate inputs from different sources. Recent technological advances have allowed us to better understand dendritic activity and its relationship with the soma. Branch-specific activity in dendrites can increase the capacity and flexibility of cell coding. This article discusses the forms of localized and branch-specific activity, their functional relevance, and the underlying biophysical and circuit-level mechanisms, using experimental data from the hippocampal area CA3 as examples.

Rapid odor processing by layer 2 subcircuits in lateral entorhinal cortex

Sebastian H. Bitzenhofer et al.

Summary: This study reveals the encoding of olfactory information by L2 cells in the LEC and highlights the importance of temporal coding in distinguishing odor identity and intensity. The firing rates of L2 cells weakly correlate with odor concentration, while spike timing changes represent odor intensity. The relative timing of pyramidal and fan cell spikes provides a temporal code for odor intensity.

Voltage Clamp Errors During Estimation of Concurrent Excitatory and Inhibitory Synaptic Input to Neurons with Dendrites

Minh-Son To et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of voltage clamp errors on synaptic conductance estimates during concurrent excitation and inhibition onto dendrites. The results show that dendritically located conductances are consistently underestimated, especially inhibitory conductances. The study also reveals correlations and distortions in the estimated conductance time course.

Summary: This article discusses specific features of biological neurons and their dendritic trees, and how adopting these features in artificial neural networks could enhance computational capabilities and reduce power consumption. By incorporating dendritic anatomy, dendritic non-linearities, and compartmentalized plasticity rules, machine learning applications could benefit from improved learning and information processing.

Dopamine facilitates associative memory encoding in the entorhinal cortex

Jason Y. Lee et al.

Summary: Mounting evidence suggests that dopamine plays a critical role in encoding cue-reward association rules in layer 2a fan cells of the lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC), and sends novelty-induced reward expectation signals to the LEC. Inhibition of LEC dopamine signals disrupts associative encoding of fan cells and impairs learning performance.

Recruitment and inhibitory action of hippocampal axo-axonic cells during behavior

Barna Dudok et al.

Summary: The research discovered that the axon initial segment of hippocampal pyramidal cells is under GABAergic control by chandelieror axo-axonic cells (AACs). It was found that AACs in mice are synchronously activated during episodes of locomotion or whisking, and intervention experiments showed that AACs inhibit CA1 pyramidal cells.

Alternating sources of perisomatic inhibition behavior

Barna Dudok et al.

Summary: Interneurons expressing cholecystokinin (CCK) and parvalbumin (PV) play important roles in regulating hippocampal pyramidal cell output. The activity of CCK BCs in the CA1 of the mouse hippocampus scales inversely with PV and pyramidal cell activity at behaviorally relevant timescales. This inverse coupling is mediated through powerful inhibitory control of CCK BCs by PV cells, demonstrating a novel form of brain-state-specific segregation of inhibition during spontaneous behavior.

A new reduced-morphology model for CA1 pyramidal cells and its validation and comparison with other models using HippoUnit

Matus Tomko et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a simplified morphology model of rat CA1 pyramidal cell, which retains major dendritic branch classes. Validation with HippoUnit shows that the model performs better in replicating physiological features and shortens computational time compared to other models. The reduced-morphology model can be a substitute for more complex models in computationally demanding simulations.

Acetylcholine prioritises direct synaptic inputs from entorhinal cortex to CA1 by differential modulation of feedforward inhibitory circuits

Jon Palacios-Filardo et al.

Summary: Acetylcholine release in the hippocampus is crucial for the formation of new memories, with a preferential enhancement of sensory information from the entorhinal cortex. Cholinergic modulation reorganizes inhibitory networks in the hippocampal CA1 region, prioritizing inputs from the entorhinal cortex over those from the CA3 region. This is achieved through activation of a combination of M3 and M4 muscarinic receptors.
