Oxygen administration during surgery and postoperative organ injury: observational cohort study

David R. McIlroy et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between supraphysiological oxygen administration during surgery and postoperative kidney, heart, and lung injury. The results indicate that increased oxygen exposure is associated with a higher risk of acute kidney injury, myocardial injury, and lung injury.

Oxygen-Saturation Targets for Critically Ill Adults Receiving Mechanical Ventilation

Matthew W. Semler et al.

Summary: The study found that using different oxygen saturation targets in critically ill adults receiving invasive mechanical ventilation did not affect the number of ventilator-free days or in-hospital mortality rates.

Lower or Higher Oxygenation Targets for Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure

Olav L. Schjorring et al.

Summary: Among adult patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in the ICU, setting a lower target for arterial oxygen did not result in lower mortality at 90 days compared to a higher target.

Effect of Low-Normal vs High-Normal Oxygenation Targets on Organ Dysfunction in Critically Ill Patients A Randomized Clinical Trial

Harry Gelissen et al.

Summary: A multicenter randomized clinical trial in the Netherlands found that targeting a low-normal Pao(2) compared with a high-normal Pao(2) did not lead to a significant reduction in organ dysfunction among critically ill patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). The study may have had limited power to detect a smaller treatment effect than was hypothesized.
