Frequency of transmission, asymptomatic shedding, and airborne spread of Streptococcus pyogenes in schoolchildren exposed to scarlet fever: a prospective, longitudinal, multicohort, molecular epidemiological, contact-tracing study in England, UK

Rebecca Cordery et al.

Summary: This study found that transmission of Streptococcus pyogenes in schools is intense and can occur before or despite treatment of cases. Despite adherence to guidelines, a few classroom contacts can shed a large amount of S pyogenes, leading to outbreaks, and airborne transmission may play a significant role in its spread. These findings highlight the need for research to improve understanding of airborne transmission and assess the effectiveness of interventions to reduce the spread of S pyogenes.
