Summary: Road traffic injuries in Ethiopia cause significant economic loss to households and pose a financial threat to seeking trauma care. Private hospitals incur higher out-of-pocket expenditures for trauma care. The Ethiopian government should implement interventions for preventing road traffic injuries and provide universal public finance for trauma care.

The findings suggest that multiple household and health system level factors need to be addressed in order to improve financial risk protection and healthcare access and utilization in the region.
