The proportion of loss to follow-up from antiretroviral therapy (ART) and its association with age among adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Cheru Tesema Leshargie et al.

Summary: In sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of loss to follow-up among HIV-positive adolescents appears to be higher compared to other regions, with older adolescents (15-19 years old) being more likely to be lost to follow-up. There is no significant relationship between gender and loss to follow-up, and regional differences in the proportion of adolescent loss to follow-up are not statistically significant. Furthermore, a trend analysis suggests that the proportion of adolescent loss to follow-up is increasing over time.

Age-specific mortality rate ratios in adolescents and youth aged 10-24 years living with perinatally versus nonperinatally acquired HIV

Sophie Desmonde et al.

Summary: The study found that mortality rates were significantly higher among adolescents and youth living with nonperinatally acquired HIV (YNPHIV) compared to those living with perinatally acquired HIV (YPHIV), especially in the 10-19 age group. Specific interventions including HIV testing and early engagement in care are urgently needed to improve survival among YNPHIV.

Incidence and predictors of mortality within the first year of antiretroviral therapy initiation at Debre-Markos Referral Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: A retrospective follow up study

Agazhe Aemro et al.

Summary: AIDS is a fatal infectious disease with high mortality rates, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. A study conducted in Northwest Ethiopia found that rural residence, longer pre-ART duration, ambulatory or bedridden functional status, and not taking Cotrimoxazole preventive therapy were independent predictors of early mortality among adults on ART within the first year of treatment. Special attention for rural patients and provision of preventive therapy are crucial to reduce mortality rates.

Predictors of mortality rate among adult HIV-positive patients on antiretroviral therapy in Metema Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: a retrospective follow-up study

Kefale Lejadiss Workie et al.

Summary: The study found that male gender, higher viral load, advanced disease stage (III and IV), TB coinfection, low BMI, and low hemoglobin levels were significant predictors of mortality among HIV patients on antiretroviral therapy. Special attention and interventions are needed to reduce the mortality rate among this population.
