Bibliometric Evaluation of US Neurosurgery Subspecialties and Academic Rank Using RCR Index

Summary: The study found that academic neurosurgeons in general neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery had lower m-RCR scores than their peers in other subspecialties, while there was no significant difference in w-RCR among subspecialties. Higher academic rank was associated with increased m-RCR and w-RCR scores.

Trends in Academic Spine Neurosurgeon Productivity as Measured by the Relative Citation Ratio

Summary: This study analyzes the RCR indices of 358 academic spine neurosurgeons in the United States, finding that gender and academic rank are associated with increased RCR values, while career duration and Ph.D. acquisition are not. Overall, academic spine neurosurgeons have high RCR values relative to the NIH standard and comparable values to the field of neurological surgery.

Predictors of an academic career among fellowship-trained spinal neurosurgeons

Summary: Increased protected research time during residency, a higher h-index during residency, completing more than one clinical fellowship, and attending one of the 5 programs graduating the most fellowship-trained neurosurgical spinal surgeons independently predicted an academic career trajectory. These results may be useful in identifying and advising trainees interested in academic spine neurosurgery.
