A 3D dynamic analysis model of VLFS is formulated based on Huston's interpretation of the Kane methodology, which accurately predicts the performance of large floating structures under different wave conditions.
A 3D dynamic analysis model of VLFS is formulated based on Huston's interpretation of the Kane methodology. In this proposed model, the VLFS is considered as a serial of discrete floating bodies linked by universal joints with elasticity. The computing formulas of rotation stiffnesses of elastic universal joints are put forward based on the bending moments and torsions equivalent between the continuous beam model and the model of discrete jointed multiple bodies. The applicability of the formulas is verified through the comparison of the results in this paper and other literature. Validation of the Kane-based method and the correctness of corresponding programme developed are made by several comparative studies on a large floating structure in variant wave conditions. The predictions based on the proposed method are highly in coincidence with the model test observations and predicted results given by the related literatures.
